What app do I use to control my R2-D2?
The App.
? When you bought your R2 unit, you got an app to control it and even play a tune. What about those of us who already have the app and want to use it to control our units? In this case, I'm talking about the new Android version of the app called R2-D2 Remote Control that was released last week. It was recently available for download in the Google Play store, but we received an email on Monday with the news that it has been pulled. I don't know why, but the version in the Play store is still working.
You can see some videos of it working at YouTube.com/roboticschannel.
The reason it was pulled is because the company that makes the app, Robotronics, has been acquired by the same company that makes the iPhone. That company is Apple, so they are now making the R2-D2 app.
I am not sure what will happen to the app once it is taken down. Maybe there will be an Android version of the app, or maybe the R2-D2 app will be pulled from the Google Play store and then someone will make another version.
If you have an R2-D2, you are not alone in this problem. I've had several other people ask me how they can get their unit to control their units, and then they show me the message in the Google Play store saying that the R2-D2 Remote Control is no longer available.
I have not had time to test it, but the message says was removed from the Google Play Store. So, I will not be able to download it and test it. If you are one of those people, I'm sorry, but you are stuck until someone else makes the app again.
I have seen people posting on Facebook that they were able to download it and work on it. I have not tested this.
I have no idea when someone else will make an app. I don't know if there are other apps that do the same thing. I don't know if someone else will be able to make the app again.
How do you control Hasbro R2-D2?
It's difficult to imagine an action figure without this most-recognizable robot in the Star Wars universe, yet Hasbro has a history of being somewhat inconsistent with its version of the character.
The R2 unit in the original 1977 Star Wars film was actually a little different from the R2-D2 we're all familiar with. Back then, he was the only fully functioning and capable robot in the film. By the time of Return of the Jedi, the character evolved to become more of a droid buddy for Luke Skywalker.
In the new Star Wars films, the Hasbro version of R2-D2 does the same thing, although it looks a lot like the robot from the old movies. This is actually the first time the two have been shown together, and it definitely appears to be a match made in heaven.
How do you control this toy? This guy is a little bit different from your average action figure. First off, the R2-D2 is a remote control that looks like a human hand and has a lot of buttons. The top one is actually a trigger, and can activate the robot. However, there's also a lower button that can be pressed to activate a sound effect similar to the droid's familiar beep.
As a remote-control figure, R2-D2 doesn't require batteries to operate. Instead, there are magnets underneath his body, which hold on to metal objects. The magnets allow the R2 to move around easily and turn in all directions, and they're also compatible with many play sets and games.
The Hasbro R2-D2 is quite different from the first version, but the R2 will fit into all the same locations as the original one. The only exception is that he's actually sitting on his own base, so you'll need to set him down on a flat surface to play with him.
How is it different from the old version? The Hasbro version of R2-D2 is a lot smaller than the original. In fact, the size difference is pretty dramatic. R2 is only about 3.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. The figure from the 1977 movie was 7.

You'll need to connect your Android phone to the R2-D2, which you'll find by looking for the speaker and microphone in the front of the droid.

Is Hasbro Smart R2-D2 app discontinued?
I have been using the R2-D2 Smart app for several years now.
It has been a great resource for finding new products and learning about them. The only problem is that Hasbro has discontinued it and I am not sure if there are any plans to bring it back. Hasbro could not provide me with a reason as to why they have discontinued it. I was wondering if anyone had used this app and knows if this will be returning?
As of December 4th, 2025, Hasbro has completely discontinued the R2-D2 app for Android and iOS.
