There was no hiding from history. Spain's first appearance at a World Cup finals was also their last. In 1950, just two years after the country won its first ever major trophy - the European Championship - Spain hosted the World Cup finals for the first time. It ended in disaster.

In the early hours of that hot morning on 17 June 1950, Spain defeated the hosts, Brazil, in the final and set a record for the most goals ever scored in a World Cup final. The Spanish players were ecstatic, but they were also exhausted.

The match finished just before 4am, remembers David Prez Jimnez, a goalkeeper for Real Madrid who represented Spain from 1964 until 1974 and won the European Championship in 1968. The players were taken to their hotel, but the police forced them to return to the stadium. The players went out on to the field in their T-shirts, with their sweaters, shorts, socks and slippers. I was there. I've never seen anything like it.

After being booed by their own fans and a large portion of the Brazilian media for their group stage exit, Brazil's stars were faced with the harsh reality that they couldn't go home. With a place in the knockout stage at stake, they would have to carry their country through until the quarter-finals against Croatia.

To this day, the majority of people blame the loss on Neymar, who went missing from the game in a manner we'll never forget. However, it is true that he did miss the last game, and his absence could be one of the reasons why they were knocked out.

Neymar was probably the least prepared player in the World Cup and Brazil knew it. He had the talent but he couldn't do much with the ball at his feet. He showed a lack of confidence which is something the Brazilian Football Association, or CBF, couldn't take anymore. Neymar had to go.

When Brazil play, Brazil play hard. They play with heart and passion, but sometimes these two things are not enough. They lost against Mexico because they did not make any mistakes. They kept on going for the whole game, until they found out that Mexico had already qualified.

Their biggest mistake was against Germany and Mexico, but they didn't lose against either team. Against Germany, Brazil was not at their best. They were slow and lacked direction. The same happened against Mexico where Brazil didn't show up for the game.

Against Spain, they were still playing hard and did well, but they lost because Spain scored the second goal. They should have scored a goal before they gave away the free-kick.

Brazil were not ready to play against Mexico, Germany and Spain. At this point of the tournament, they needed to use a new style of play, and this is what they didn't do. When they won the World Cup in 2026, Brazil were very slow, they played football like Spain and France.

But they lacked speed, they lacked character. It's a completely different thing when you can't control the game as in the final stages. Their character was the reason why they won the World Cup back in 2026, but they lost in 2026 because they were not ready to play the final stages.

At the other end of the spectrum, we can see that he was taken off after a good 20 minutes of action and then replaced by Andres Iniesta. Firstly, they scored from corners which they won. Secondly, they scored from counter attacks. And thirdly, they scored from set plays.

Corner scoring. In total, Spain won 5 corners from which they scored. This was England's first goal as well as the ones which were awarded against them.

All three of the corner kicks which resulted in Spain scoring were direct free kicks. Ronaldo's goal, for example, was a direct free kick from a corner.

Spain didn't score from any indirect corners. Counter attacking. In total, Spain won 29 counter attacking opportunities in the game. England didn't win a single counter attacking opportunity. England's counter attacking style is always based around their full backs trying to get forward.
