What is selenium salt used for?

Can horses have selenium 90?

My horse has recently been diagnosed with a selenium deficiency.

His serum selenium level is in the suboptimal range (0.8-1.2 mcg/dl). Is there a level below which his selenium level is so low that it is considered selenium deficient? If not, how do you know if a horse has selenium deficiency or not?

Replies to This Discussion. I'd guess the answer would depend on how your veterinarian defines "selenium deficiency." I'd have to see what kind of selenium supplements you're using (if any) and what dose they recommend. And I'd also have to know what your horse's diet was like before the selenium levels started getting low.

I've never had a horse get selenium deficient, but my mare was on a supplement that contained 0.5 mg selenium per kilo. She was fine when I got her, but I didn't realize then that she had a previous episode of gastric torsion that resulted in her being off food for several days. I'm not sure if the selenium was enough to prevent recurrence, but at least she was on a high enough dose to prevent selenium deficiency.

There are no clear-cut definitions of deficiency and sufficiency for most nutrients. My own experience with horses suggests that it is not uncommon for horses to have selenium levels that are too low. Horses need at least 2 mcg/kg of selenium per day for optimum health. I suspect that many horses have selenium levels that are sub-optimal, but they don't know they are deficient because they don't have any symptoms.

How can you tell if a horse is deficient without signs? It is impossible. Some horses need more selenium than others. I know that I have some horses that need to have their selenium levels tested every six months to make sure they are getting the right amount.

There are some signs that a horse might be deficient. They include: Pale skin- Weakness- Poor coat quality- Slow to gain weight. Horses with selenium deficiency usually don't have these signs, however. The only way to tell if a horse is selenium deficient is to test its selenium levels.

Does redmond real salt have minerals in it?

I am trying to get a grip on this topic.

It looks like it can be really helpful in the health of my body and as well, to live longer. It seems that if you are eating your food naturally, then you're getting the healthy mineral benefits out of your food. So I would like to know what foods contain Redmond real salt with a lot of minerals. Thanks in advance for any input.

Replies to This Discussion. I'm sure many great sources of high-mineralized foods exist but I don't know what some of them are. One that comes to mind is the Himalayan pink salt that the owner claims is the most mineralized of all salts.

If I had to guess I'd say that in addition to being a great source of minerals, this type of salt is also rich in some iodine which in many cases will improve the absorption of certain trace minerals through your digestive tract. Thanks for your response. I will try to find some more information about this. It looks like an awesome product. I will see if I can find a local supplier to pick up some myself. I do not eat processed foods because the chemicals are terrible for your body. I find that the chemicals are there, even if you avoid it. If I do get a supply of redmond real salt would I have to use them sparingly to get the benefits or could I just use a normal cup and it would be fine?

Yes, the Himalayan pink salt is indeed a great source of minerals. But the sodium is actually an issue, because it is one of the first things that your body craves. The reason it's so important is because of how much our brain is made up of sodium! Also, there are some studies that suggest that too much of it, causes water retention (fluid retention), something that is especially common for women when they are perimenopausal. It's probably not an issue for most of us, but it's something that is to be considered.

And yes, the salt can be used in moderation. One cup a day is the goal. One thing that is different about the Himalayan pink salt is that it is an excellent source of the other nutrients that are normally missing in salt, including the ones that make up the B vitamins. This makes it far superior to the average salt!

Thanks for the info.

What is selenium salt used for?

Sodium selenite. What does it act as? A selenium containing compound that acts as a supplement. Selenium is an essential trace element that is beneficial for your body to help increase metabolic activity, combat infections, fight against cancer and prevent damage from radiation. Selenium is very high in organic foods so look at your daily intake!

In which parts of the world does this occur? Selenium occurs naturally in water, soil and air, and animals like sheep, cattle and fish all contain more than adequate amounts. However, it is also found in certain vegetable foods, such as garlic and onions, as well as in sea foods like fish, shellfish and seaweed. However, selenium in plant form is found in very limited amounts.

In what ways is it used? As a nutritional supplement. How can I benefit from it? Selenium plays an important role in protecting your immune system, maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system and helping reduce the risk of some cancers. This mineral is also needed to make thyroxine (T4) which regulates the body's metabolism.

This supplement is generally accepted as safe when taken at levels of around 50 mcg per day, which is just enough to maintain a healthy level of thyroid function. How much is it? The recommended daily dose is 55-90 mcg per day. The daily dose is 1-2 mg for people who are on thyroid medication, or are pregnant.

Who should not take this? Do not use if you have had a history of allergy to selenium or have had any symptoms associated with high levels of selenium. What happens if I miss doses? If you are on a daily dose you should take the first dose in the morning and take your last dose in the evening. The first dose in the morning will be effective throughout the day. You should not need to take more than three daily doses, but do not take a dose more than 4 hours before or after taking your normal dose. If you miss two doses or more, take a double dose as soon as possible.

What are its effects on the body? Selenium is required to make the thyroid hormones T3 and T4.

Does redmond salt have selenium?

I don't know how often it is added but it seems redsalt (or sodium selenate? or what ever salt the name of) does have some Se in it. My mom told me when my little brother started throwing up a lot that redmond salt (which I've used many times before, not recently, it's about 10 years old) has selenium in it. Apparently she read that somewhere and used it as the answer.

But my brother still vomits a lot. Is there any such salt or mineral supplement that contains selenium? My brother is only 8, has been to a pediatrician and is getting no help.
