What is selenium 90 used for?
Selenium is a mineral that is essential to the health of animals.
Selenium supplementation in a food ration is used for general well-being, immune system enhancement and disease prevention. Selenium also acts as antioxidant. Selenium can be used to supplement food or animals that are not receiving proper nutrition.
What is selenium used for in humans? Selenium is used in the treatment of cancer, heart disease, hypertension, thyroid problems, and high cholesterol. Selenium is also used in the treatment of arthritis and psoriasis.
Does selenium need to be combined with vitamin E? Some forms of selenium do require additional vitamin E. However, this is usually taken only when large amounts of selenium are required, such as during treatment for cancer.
How much selenium is safe? The recommended daily allowance of selenium is 55 mcg/day. The average American consumes approximately 80 mcg per day. Many people believe they are deficient in selenium but are actually within the safe limit. Too much selenium, however, can cause health problems. The most common side effects are hair loss, fatigue, and nausea.
How does selenium treat cancer? Scientists have found that selenium treatments can effectively treat and prevent cancer. When a patient with cancer is on a selenium-rich diet, the chances of developing or contracting cancer are decreased. Studies have shown that selenium can lower the risk of cancer in women who have a family history of breast cancer. It may also reduce the risk of breast cancer by as much as 80%.
Does selenium cure cancer? Selenium cannot cure cancer. However, if cancer is diagnosed and the appropriate treatment is given, selenium will help control and reduce the progression of the cancer. Selenium can make treatment easier and also lessen side effects.
How does selenium prevent cancer? In addition to its ability to control and reduce the progression of cancer, selenium may help prevent cancer from forming in the first place. The American Cancer Society (ACS) says that when eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and limiting the amount of alcohol consumed, a significant decrease in the chances of developing cancer is seen.

Does Redmond Real Salt contain iodine?
I have a question about Redmond Real Salt.
Does anyone know if there's any iodine in it? It's always stated on the bottle that they use sea salt but nothing is said about anything else like iodine.
I haven't found any source talking about iodine, either from Redmond or anywhere else. But I'm no scientist, so if there's some data somewhere, someone probably would. Just wondering if anyone else has heard anything, or has any idea where that claim of "sea salt" comes from (there's no such thing in nature, of course).
The company states its ingredients "by weight" which means that iodine is listed. They are right that sea salt does not contain iodine, nor should it.
Since iodine is added to the salt, I'm guessing Redmond realizes that the average consumer would not know what iodine is if they just tasted the salt. That and perhaps its more marketing ploy than nutritional science behind its claim.
This thread makes me a little bit curious. In all seriousness, though, would you know what iodine is if it wasn't for this thread? I'd be shocked to find out that I was using a "chemical element that prevents goiter" in my kitchen. Even if there are side-effects that are a big deal, I would find it difficult to justify their negative importance over the positive value of having your kitchen with more "purity".
The iodine claim could be true, even though we don't know much about whether it helps people (I'm pretty sure no studies on whether it helps have been done, that doesn't mean the studies haven't been done). I can't really tell if this was a marketing ploy, because at the same time, this could turn out to be an important public health matter.
All that said, this is how I understand things: Iodine, while needed for thyroid function, and while a chemical element with health benefits, I suspect that it's not really considered especially important for humans today (other than pregnant women and babies). It's not something that is known to have side effects at all, at least that we're aware of.
For example, there's no reason why eating a lot of it couldn't be important, because when your body is low on it, there are plenty of other things it can consume to make up for it.
Does Redmond salt have selenium?
I had a look at the Wikipedia's article on selenium, which led me to find some interesting papers related to the topic of selenium salt in Redmond salt.
For instance, I found this paper Selenium can be used as an inexpensive catalyst for the selective epoxidation of olefins with H2O2, but its toxicity severely limits its use industry. To circumvent this limitation, we have found a non-toxic water-soluble form of selenium that efficiently catalyzes these reactions in good yields. It is likely that the water-soluble forms are more effective catalysts for oxidative epoxidation than the more stable organic forms because the catalysts are relatively unstable under basic conditions. These methods provide new possibilities for using selenium industry. You can't help but feel at least a little responsible when you've got that red stuff on your lips and fingertips.
Re: Redmond salt has selenium? If you were a chemist at the time you were working with Selenium (and who knows if you were?) it might have been considered a little odd that someone would be giving the name of your product "salt" when what it was being marketed as a "salt". It's just like if someone came out with a shampoo and said "it doesn't really make your hair shiny because it's not really salt", it would be kind of ridiculous for them to claim that "because you can't see any difference that it's not a salt and what difference it is actually a very subtle chemical difference". It seems to me that a chemist would look at the fact that the sodium hydroxide and the sodium chlorate reacted with each other and figure that the word "salt" was probably more accurate in describing the substance as a chemical compound. After all, if a molecule has been named something that describes what it is, that's usually pretty good guidance for the chemistry, but sometimes the name could be too broad to work well.
