The only superstar England had was Bobby Moore, whose appearance on the pitch in France would be one of the most iconic sporting moments of all time. He had turned 40 in the summer and his playing career was coming to an end, but he still had an incredible aura about him. The bookies were taking bets on who might be his replacement. It'll be either Graham Taylor or John Wainwright, said one. They're the two obvious choices, replied another. John Wainwright, said a third. No, he's too short, said a forth. Graham Taylor, insisted the last. And he was right. It was the little man from Aston Villa and a man who had been playing second fiddle to Moore for most of his career.

They needed a little extra help to qualify for the World Cup, but ultimately got it when Costa Rica missed a penalty in their final qualifier against El Salvador. The victory took Mexico to a 1-0 aggregate scoreline against the tippy-tappy Caribbean side, and then an 8-0 thrashing at home.
