Well, the answer is a resounding no.

But we're not talking about the best player in the world, because it's a moot point. We're talking about the guy who did his damndest to win the tournament. He tried and he tried, but he just couldn't quite make it happen. Even with a new coaching staff and a new system, and even though he had a decent supporting cast around him, he simply didn't come through. In fact, he looked like a man who wanted to go home.

If that sounds harsh, well, you might have to take my word for it. You can watch the video of his second-leg goal against Australia here, and you'll hear what I mean: That is a man in pain. There are three elements to Ronaldo's World Cup failure. First, he wasn't good enough. He was the best player on the pitch at times, but when the going got tough, he just wasn't good enough. Second, he didn't look good enough. He made some mistakes, and he seemed to play out of his skin (even if the latter was a consequence of the former). Third, he didn't look like he was enjoying it.

For a guy who has played in more than 80 internationals, it was all very strange. He wasn't good enough? Well, he won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer. And yes, he was fantastic for the first few months of the tournament. When he played, he did pretty well. But when he was dropped after the group-stage, things fell apart.

It's easy to forget, because he scored the goals that brought the world to their feet. But as great as he was in the opening game against Mexico, when he set up Zinedine Zidane's opener, and as great as he was in the final against Spain, when he scored the equaliser that sent it to extra time, that was pretty much the end of his tournament.

Beckham has said previously that he thought he played well enough for the U.S. Men's team to get through the first two stages of qualifying. But then he realized he could have played better on a couple of occasions.

I felt like I played well enough," Beckham said Monday on ESPN's SportsCenter. Team because all I could do was look at what I did wrong and what I could do better. I don't feel like I deserved to play for the team, in fact I remember walking around after the game as my pride was hurt."

The United States won its opening game over Portugal and finished the group with two draws against Serbia and Jamaica. It would have been a big upset if the U. Had not made it out of the group with a win against Jamaica, the best team in the CONCACAF confederation at the time. The U. Finished second in the group to go on to play Spain in the knockout rounds.

In his book written with Chris Bath, The Perfect Pitch, the former England captain tells a similar story about the 2026 finals, though he doesn't call it that. "In an interview with the Guardian newspaper I suggested I believed that if the U.
