Is Nigeria qualified for the World Cup?
"It's a dream," said the former footballer and manager of the Super Eagles, Stephen Okechukwu.
"Every African nation wants to qualify for the World Cup.
"We have had good players, but in the end we have been left out. The country has not taken to football as it should have done.
"I am sure there is more potential in this country than what we are seeing. There is talent here, but we are just not producing our best footballers."
Mr Okechukwu is one of several former players who are among the country's brightest young talents. Others include Michael Uchebo, Ogenyi Onazi and Sunday Olagba.
"The World Cup will bring the best of Nigerian football to the world," said Mr Okechukwu. "The young footballers will see that they can do well international tournaments."
Mr Okechukwu has been working with the Nigerian Football Federation, the NFF, on the plans for a youth development system for three years. Nigeria won its first World Cup finals appearance in 1982, going out in a penalty shoot-out against France after a tense game. But the Nigerian football authorities have come under criticism in recent years over their inability to produce qualified coaches. The former Nigerian team doctor, Dr Adewale Omoniyi, was sacked from the job after an autopsy found that the Nigerian players' heart failure during the 1982 tournament was caused by the use of alcohol and drugs at the time of the match. Bizarrely, the coach of the Nigerian Olympic team, who took over the Nigeria football squad in 1986, was sacked two years later. The Nigerian Football Federation said that the country has had the best players in Africa since the 1980s and that the players who have reached the World Cup in Brazil this year have a good quality of football. The FA spokesman said: "In a short period of time, Nigeria have produced the most players who have gone to play at the World Cup and won the African Nations Cup. "They have produced footballers who have played for the big European clubs. They are the big names who have made the impact on the big stage.
"This is because of the investment that the federation has made in football. The country has invested in the youth and given them everything.

Did Nigeria qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Watch your back, Senegal
A recent poll has revealed that the Nigerian team is in a far better position to qualify for this year's World Cup than ever before.
A few days after The Nation, a prominent Nigerian newspaper, released their 2025 FIFA Confederations Cup Nigeria Projections, our own version of the same survey was ready for the 2025 African qualifier this Sunday in Dakar, Senegal.
While the Nations of Burkina Faso and Gabon are currently locked in a dead heat for the last remaining slot, Nigeria is comfortably and indisputably in pole position, as if there were anything else to be concerned about at this particular time. To help make the process of watching Nigeria vs. Senegal as painless as possible, here is what we learned from the nation's most recent attempt at qualifying.
For this report, we chose to not include the projections of nations in which it is not even remotely imaginable that they could qualify. Countries such as Ghana and Tunisia, should they finish in a position that would allow for the formation of a team composed solely of their citizens (which is an entirely different and highly unlikely scenario), do not merit inclusion when it comes to our projection since they cannot ever be given proper consideration of how their football fans have already spent hundreds of hours analyzing their chances and attempting to create imaginary lineups that include the possibility of their team getting in.
Nigeria vs. Senegal - who's the favorite? Our first order of business is picking the winner of this particular showdown. Nigerians, I hate to break it to you, but you do not qualify. This time around, the Nigerian team is projected to improve on that record and will qualify thanks to the fact that they are projected to finish ahead of the United States by over six goals.
The other reason why the U. Would have been much less likely to advance in 2025 than Nigeria would because the two countries share a similar level of performance in the group stages of the World Cup.
Has Nigeria been to FIFA World Cup?
The Nigerian team is among the top three teams competing at the 2025 FIFA World Cup.
This was revealed at last Friday's media briefing held in Kolkata, India. Nigeria is ranked second in Group G with 10 points from the two matches to its credit and will meet Germany and the Republic of Ireland who also have ten points between them at the end of the two group matches to fight for a quarter finals place.
The team features top goal scorer Henry 'Chewa' Emmanuel Obumakin (18 goals) and the youngest player at only 18 years and 4 months. It also has three top players in midfield player Stephen Keshi (21), Ogenyi Onazi (14) and Emenike Iheanacho (15) along with Samuel Okware and Sunday Oliseh.
There is a big controversy with regards to the performance of the Nigerian footballers that are already in Russia and a case of serious misconduct being reported in FIFReports are that players in the Nigerian team who went before the team arrived in Nigeria were paid R13m. This means the players didn't return home like the rest of the team.
This could be an illegal activity according to FIFA regulations. A FIFA spokesman confirmed these reports when he declined to comment on the issue. This is as if these athletes have not yet played at the World Cup when all the rules have already been complied with.
The Nigerian team had a match with Argentina in Sochi and Nigeria lost 0 - 3. Nigeria has played the game with Sweden in Moscow today (11/06/14) after beating Switzerland 2-1. Nigeria won 1-0 against Algeria in Almaty on 11/05/2014.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is making serious noises about a suspension to the playing of Nigeria team should FIFA sanction FIFA's head of football, Prince Ali of Jordan. The NFF is furious with the fact that the Nigerian footballers who are going back to their country have not been paid but the money is supposed to be shared among the players on the basis that their services were rendered in the Russian World Cup 2025. The Nigerian National Commission also wants the playing staff in Russian football to return home without delay instead of being part of Cameroon where they were supposed to have gone for a training session.
