What names are accepted on Facebook?
This was a question I asked after reading through How to get more friends on Facebook and the answer is that they are not accepted.
The official stance of Facebook is that they have over 2 billion users so why should they promote this type of content? If I start promoting my name in an attempt to get me more Facebook friends it will obviously be frowned upon by the staff. I guess this could lead to a legal battle if my friends are deemed to be using their access privileges incorrectly. Do you think they would win?
3 Responses to ? Thanks for answering the question, though I have to ask for some clarification. If you had the correct e-mail address for your friend who sent you the invite, and did nothing else in regards to getting more friends or posting anything about their page, could Facebook still accuse you of violating their terms and conditions? They would be perfectly within their rights to remove you from their friend list or block your account. However, this does not necessarily mean you are violating their terms and conditions, and it certainly doesn't automatically mean you are trying to promote yourself. It is a judgement call made on a case by case basis. If you had done something more serious than sending a friend request then you would be in serious trouble.
I'm no lawyer but I doubt that their terms and conditions will be interpreted in this way. For example, on Twitter there are lots of fake usernames being used to increase the number of followers. I am not sure whether Twitter would ever remove a user if it is known they have a large number of followers who are fake. However, even if the rule is set to be as it has been interpreted on Twitter, there are very many sites where you can put your name or name of your business and it can make thousands of friends in seconds.
So you would think that if they ban your account you would have good reason to suspect that you were trying to sell people on your products or services. That is why I am wondering whether sending a friend request is considered a violation of the rules.
It's very unclear whether they would take this action. They may have the right to do it but they don't always act on that right, which makes it less clear. A friend of mine, after posting a status update on her Facebook page, had her status taken down.
How do I get Facebook to accept my name?
As you can see, I have an account with Facebook under the name Brian (as it has been for a while). But when I log in today, it is under the name "Brian" and all of the "likes" and information are visible. I have tried changing my name, email address, and everything else but nothing seems to work. I have tried changing my name and my email on my profile, and I have tried deleting my account and creating a new one, but nothing works. What do I do? Thanks in advance.
Your Profile: Brian@facebook.com 637261823. (deleted by request) It is not possible to change your profile name. The current system that Facebook uses does not allow you to change the display name. It was designed to prevent people from creating multiple profiles with different names and then hiding the others. If you were to do that, it would be very easy for them to find out which ones you hid.
It is also not possible to use a different email address. This is what is causing your problem. When you create a new account, the email address it uses is based on the name that you provided. So if you did not provide a name, or if your name is the same as your display name, the account cannot be created.
In the past, Facebook had problems with email addresses that were already in use. There was no way around this. They have changed their policies so that you can only sign up for the email address that you are going to use. So you should not be getting email alerts anymore. But you should still be able to receive messages from friends.
Facebook has recently changed how it displays the email address of the account. In the past, there was a space between the @ and the email address. In the past, Facebook would display your name first and then separate it from the email address with a period. Now they only separate the name from the email address with a period.
To make things easier, I recommend signing up for Facebook through gmail. This lets you use any email address that you want. It also gives you a good reason to use your email address as your display name. You can even link it to your current email address in your profile.
What are the symbols next to names on Facebook?
When I go to Facebook, and see the names of people on my friend list, what are the symbols next to their names that look like a little sunburst?
When I click on their names, it says they're online. When I click on their names, it says they're offline. When I click on their names, it says they're busy. Do they have their status set to something other than online? There is no way to see what status they have their status set to unless you click on their profile picture, which opens up their profile. So if you click on the name of a person who's status is "busy" and you don't know them or don't want to bother them, you just click on their name? No, you can't click on the name of someone who's status is set to busy, but you can click on the little arrow next to the name and it will open their profile. Clicking on the name of someone who has their status set to "online" will open their profile.
If you click on the name of someone who's status is "busy", it will show their busy status, but it won't show their profile. It will show a little sunburst with a line through it. It will look like this:
It looks like that because it's a symbol, it doesn't have any text associated with it. That makes sense, but when I clicked on the name of someone whose status was busy, I got an error message that said "Status Unknown". There's no option for me to click on their profile, and I can't view their profile.
