Is say something really anonymous?

A while ago I've decided to make a little experiment on myself.

I was reading a book about using anonymous remailers for mailing, as well as some books on cryptography and anonymity networks. So as the experiment for a while ago I have started to send email to one of my friends saying "you have a friend request". Now I ask you this. Was this an acceptable way to contact someone? I've used his e-mail address as well as both our personal ids so we are already friends but still this thing of sending us emails is new to me. And ofcourse his part of the test says - how can we use this technology of anonymous contacts in an age where we don't really know who is sending what messages and where? I can see how it's not that simple and it's maybe not the way I could choose to contact one of my friends for the first time, but on the other hand it makes sense. What do you think? EDIT: I'm just adding some more information about what I've done. I wasn't hiding my personal details so I think this might look more natural as a first step to me. As many of the answers say my question is also too broad now. I can try to narrow down my question. However there is only two steps between now and then. What would the first step be?
You're right, you do need a bit of a learning curve to use such services, but it isn't so complicated once you get into it. You could easily use, say, Yahoo Chat with an option to set your account as "anonymous" (although I don't know if that would count as "anonymous" over here.
