I've always been fascinated by the numbers in school applications, so for a while I've been collecting information on admission figures for Canadian universities, even though I don't want to apply to any myself.

I have a degree from U of T and an undergraduate degree from U of W, so I get one of my first few numbers from those institutions. Then I collect other admissions data from universities across Canada and cross-reference those results with other sources to determine whether any trend is emerging.

The first numbers come from the National Student Survey, which is what every Canadian school uses to determine how much money they can charge parents for sending their kids to their schools. For 2010-2011, the NSNS reported that a typical Alberta university had 3,929 full-time students and 726 part-time students, which works out to about 2,650 students at the full-time level. So when I find that U of W has 3,723 undergraduates and U of T 3,776, there's some sense of the average number of students per institution.

The National Student Survey has its own problems, however. There's no public disclosure of the raw numbers, so it's a bit hard to analyze the NSNS results properly, but I think that the general trend does seem to be that Alberta gets fewer students than the provinces with comparable population and GDP, which are all close to about 4,000 students, or U of A might have about 3,000 students. Some of the major universities in Canada are significantly oversubscribed. Even U of T and U of W aren't.

So I've been looking for an alternate data source, which is harder to get access to. A few years ago, an organization called Education Data Watch came to my attention as a good source of information on college admissions, but a lot of the data they release is private. As far as I know, U of A doesn't do business with EDW, so I haven't been able to see much in that regard. Another organization, Academic Partnerships North America, supplies information about university cooperation on undergraduate admissions, but their data is only available through an online survey.
