How fast is the Asus RT-AC68U?
That's what I wondered, as I tried to get a feel for how fast the AC68U really was.
The answer is, "pretty damn fast". The Asus has a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port, and the chip supports dual-display capability. The RT-AC68U is capable of delivering 4 Gbps of bandwidth. As for gigahertz, that's a term that can't be used for a single device because it means different things to different people. I would say that this chip delivers about 40% of the speed of USB 3.0 (which is generally how we refer to the standard).
It's also worth pointing out that the specs on the Asus say that it's USB Type C. However, the Asus also says that it's a USB 2.0 chip. To use the USB-C port on the RT-AC68U, you must use a dongle.
A new chip from Intel, the X299 chipset, is designed to replace the existing Z270 chipsets. With the X299, Intel has taken a different approach. The company went with PCIe Gen 3 support, more memory, more PCIe lanes, and SATA III 6 Gb/s support.
The Intel Core i9-9900K has been a strong performer. The company recently put a new 10th-gen chip in that category.
We had a chance to get our hands on the ASUS X299M-A WS Reviewed. The company says that it's the "first motherboard" to support the X299 chipset, which was announced at CES 2025. This is an enthusiast-grade board, and it's definitely built for overclocking.
There are some things that we didn't like about the ASUS X299M-A WS. For one, the company is selling it as a pre-built system. That means that you'd have to put it together. A lot of companies sell ready-made systems, but it's still up to the user to install the motherboard, CPU, RAM, SSD, and storage. In our review, we put the motherboard in a case, so we had all of those parts ready for testing.
What you don't get are all of the other features that you might expect to get in a pre-built system.
