How do I become a beta tester for Google?
Hi.
I'd like to become a beta tester for Google. I've been using their products for a long time and like them, but I haven't had any luck finding out how to become a beta tester. All I see are "beta testers" that need help and "beta testers" who want to beta testers. Can anyone tell me where I can go to get started? Thanks.

How to register for beta testing?
To register as a Beta tester, follow these steps: Go to Google Play and sign in with your registered Gmail address.
Go to the Google Play Store and download a game or app. Open the Play Store app on your device and tap the More icon. Then, click Beta testing.
Click the Playstore, and then enter your Google ID and password. Choose the device you want to install Playgames app on. Check the box next to the option for install Playgames app directly, and tap Next.
You will see a list of your Google devices. Tap to change the default installation, if needed.
In the next step, tap Install. On your device, the Playgames app should appear in your list of apps and games.
Use the back arrow at the top to return to previous steps and exit the Play Store app. How do I invite friends? In the Play Games app, click the name of a player you want to invite. This player appears in the Game details page, where you can view his profile, and send an invitation by tapping on the play button. Or, use the search feature to find your friend (invitees).
In the Search section, type in the name of the person you want to add and press Search. If this person is already in your list of friends, he will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. Tap the name to bring him into the Game.
If this person is not in your list, tap the add button next to his profile picture, then tap the Invite button to add him to your list of friends.
Do Google beta testers get paid?
Google has been in the news a lot lately for all the wrong reasons. The latest news on the front is that, according to reports, Google is paying some of its beta testers for testing out the upcoming update to its Chrome browser.
Reports are that as many as one million beta testers will be rewarded with gifts, and it is only those that are highly motivated that will be eligible for the rewards. The reason Google is doing this is to reward those that are willing to try out the new features before the final release.
The question that people are asking is, what is the difference between beta testers and regular users? Well, the answer is that beta testers aren't given the chance to get anything like this. For example, if you are beta testing Chrome, you can get rewards when the final release comes around. However, regular users do not have this opportunity.
One thing is for sure though, we don't have to worry about Google going out of business or any other such things. The reason why Google does this is that the company wants to stay profitable. This is because Google is well aware of how things like these work. It was even part of Google's IPO filing.
If you are interested in being a part of this program, you can still participate even if you aren't in the US. You can get access to the program by clicking here.
How to download Google Play Store beta?
So far, we haven't seen the Google Play Store beta for Windows Phone in the UK yet, but we do now have an invite for testers over on the XDA Portal.
Here's what you need to do to get your hands on it - just follow these instructions and you should be good to go.
The download is around 2.5GB in size, which is fine for us as we've got a high-speed connection. You'll need to head to the link below, scroll down to the second button (which says "Join"), and enter your email address into the relevant field. Once it's processed, you'll need to wait around a day or two for the email to appear, with a direct message confirming your registration to the Google Play Store beta.
Once that has been confirmed, you'll be able to grab the beta app from the Windows Phone Store, where you'll also find details of the version you're getting, along with a link to the full documentation for the beta. When you're happy with it, tap Install to begin the download and installation process.
As you can see, it's pretty quick and painless, and while there are some restrictions on what you can do, it's certainly promising. Of course, this is still just the beta at this stage, so not everything will work. The big question is whether the beta version is going to work in other regions too. As you know, Google Play doesn't allow you to pick what markets you want to test with - you can test it in one country or all of them.
If you want to read more about what this beta allows you to do, check out the full details of how the store works, including the new permissions it requires you to grant it. The full changelog is also pretty interesting, as you can see below.
I'm going to assume that these features will be available on Windows Phone 8 when it eventually launches, although of course we can't be sure of that just yet. Do any of you have an invite? Or do you already have an invite and can confirm it works for you? I'm in the US, signed up & waiting for the invite.
