Why does ExpressVPN connect but doesn't work?

Why is my VPN not working on my Mac?

A few months ago, we started a new VPN service called Private Internet Access. We are proud to offer the best VPN service available for Mac and PC users alike. Our VPN service is super simple, but works well on all operating systems.

If you've signed up for a Private Internet Access account before, you're already familiar with our service. But if not, here's what you need to know.

Is my VPN working? If your Mac is connected to the internet, Private Internet Access should work as normal. Your IP address, the amount of data transferred, and your connection speed should be the same as without VPN.

If you're having problems connecting, check our troubleshooting guide. If the problem persists, check our help forum or contact our support team for more information.

Do I need to do anything to use my VPN on Mac? No, you don't have to do anything to use Private Internet Access on your Mac. You simply connect to our server and it should automatically detect the VPN connection.

However, you can still use the Private Internet Access web app even if your Mac is connected to the internet without VPN. This will let you quickly connect to your VPN on your Mac, even if your laptop is not connected to the internet.

If you're having trouble connecting to the Private Internet Access website, the problem might be that your web browser is not setup to handle the Private Internet Access website. Click the gear icon in the upper right hand corner and click Settings. This will open the settings for your browser. Go to the Privacy tab and uncheck the box to Block cookies and other site-specific data.

Why can't I connect to my VPN on my Mac? You'll need to check our troubleshooting guide first. There are a few things that could be causing your connection issues.

Check your IP address. One of the first things we want you to check is your IP address. On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced. Scroll down until you see the IP address column. Make sure that your IP address is in the range of 10.1 through 10.254.

Why does ExpressVPN connect but doesn't work?

You might encounter that ExpressVPN connects but doesn't work or that the connections are slow. You have read the tips in the section "Connection Problems" to try to fix the problem. The question is: What do you do if it does not work? Here are some solutions.

Solution #1 - Turn off the VPN. Do you already know that your connection is working? If it doesn't, turn off your VPN and let it reconnect. For ExpressVPN Premium users you do not have to worry about turning it off because this option is available to you in the app. But if you are still a free user, just log off from your web browser and connect the VPN back on. The ExpressVPN Client can be restarted on both computers as well.

Why does the connection stop? Some of the most common cases you have encountered are in connection problems of ExpressVPN. Do the following to fix a connection that stops: Click the menu button with 3 dots on your right. Select Connections. In a search field enter the name of the network that is not working. Select More options. Select VPN server. Select ExpressVPN Advanced. In the Settings window enter an IP Address you want your VPN connection to make. Enter your desired DNS Server and Subnet Mask information in the boxes below the one that has IP/Subnet and DNS Settings. Click Connect at the bottom of the window. Now, when you reopen your web browser to view your favorite sites, the ones which were unavailable or very slow will now be available.

If everything works, you can turn on your VPN again but you would want to use the same IP and IP/Subnet again and click the Save button at the bottom of the window so you can keep that IP. This method should work for any of the common VPN connection issues. It may happen that a VPN isn't working for you, you might have changed it's options, settings or there might be different reasons. If the above solution works and still, the problem persists then read on for other possible solutions.

Solution #2 - Turn the server on and off. If you are getting a connection but nothing happens; this error means that the server which you've connected to, is busy or that no data is going through.
