Where can I watch The Boys in the UK?
A new Channel 4 drama called The Boys follows an unlikely group of friends who, at different stages of their lives, find themselves trying to save their community from itself. It's a gritty and realistic depiction of young life in a rough part of town. Set in the 1990s, it's the story of an unruly group of lads who live and work together. The leader, James (played by Joe Cole), comes from a family of tough men, and his upbringing breeds violence. The leader of his gang, Daz (played by Ben Whishaw), is trying to live a low-key existence, and has a quiet dignity about him. The charismatic, manipulative pimp, Chibbins (played by Harry Treadaway), has an addiction to money, but is too stupid to know when he's being conned. The leader of the gang, Stokes (played by Olly Hunter), is the most volatile of the four; he doesn't have the same ambitions as the other three, but has an extraordinary sense of duty and justice. They're joined by the ambitious, yet naive and vulnerable, Sam (played by John Boyega) - but none of them know that they are all heading for a collision course with a local gang boss.
The series is based on a novel of the same name by Lee Child, and was filmed in Hackney, east London. It was co-created and written by Richard Hall, who also wrote the original film version of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and is the writer-director of the brilliant Pizza Club movie, with Steve Coogan, Paul Whitehouse and Paul Anderson. Richard wrote and directed the films The Full Monty, Urban Cowboy, Dirty Weekend, Four Weddings and A Funeral, and co-wrote The Proposition and The Iron Lady. He is a writer and director on screen and on TV, with his films appearing on both sides of the Atlantic, and several of his plays currently running around London.
So, what did the makers get right? Well, they've made it incredibly relevant and realistic, without losing the sense of the funny, the shocking and the tragic.

Is The Boys a Netflix original?
The new series stars Matthew Macfadyen and Mark Ruffalo as the eccentric detectives, and is now available to stream on Netflix. The title of the series - The Boys - could be interpreted as a tribute to the iconic Batman series starring Michael Keaton. But it is a reference to the band of police officers who investigate crime scenes with a kind of rough-and-tumble camaraderie that would make even the Joker smile.
The new series, written by Joe Penhall, is an adaptation of the award-winning play which began life at the Royal Court Theatre in London before transferring to the West End, where it starred Macfadyen and Ruffalo. It is the story of two ageing detectives who have been brought together to investigate the murder of their former partner, who was involved in a paedophile ring. As the police are unable to find any evidence to implicate any of the suspects, they look to their own past for answers.
Ruffalo and Macfadyen play Robert and Dean, former colleagues who were forced out of the Metropolitan Police Service following a series of allegations. When a former colleague is found murdered, the pair are brought together to investigate.
This will be a tough one for me to review. I'm a huge fan of The Boys, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Netflix has done with the adaptation. But while I'm a huge fan of the play, I'm not quite as big a fan of the film.
I liked the movie well enough, but I didn't find it as funny or as compelling as the play. It had some great actors and I think it was well-made, but it just didn't do it for me.
Here's what I thought of the original production. Macfadyen and Ruffalo play two ageing cops. The two characters of Robert and Dean are played by the duo of Matthew Macfadyen and Mark Ruffalo. Both are excellent at portraying real-life characters, and they show it here.
Robert is an old-school cop who has spent a career investigating serious crimes. He has a chip on his shoulder and often gets frustrated with his younger, more liberal co-worker. But he cares for his partner, Dean, and sees him through some dark times in their lives.
