I use Mullvad VPN to tunnel through a country where the internet is slow and expensive, for example Australia.

You'd think that this would mean a huge performance boost in terms of connection speed, but I'm not exactly sure what benefits this has.

I also think that it can be said the servers they use are public, because their own servers must be located somewhere so people are able to access them. I haven't heard any other details besides that though.

My question is if their servers/servers on other companies' servers are only used during idle moments, as soon as they need a connection, they rent a server from someone else to use. Am I right? Re: Mullvad VPN has dedicated IP? Your assumptions are right in terms of their setup. They do, in fact, rent servers from another company.

Their server load is always very high, but since they lease out servers to other companies, they have to rent from someone with a server that has enough "spare" capacity to be rented (or at least something they aren't charging for). Their network is large enough to run its own servers (their servers are not owned by someone else, just leased from them), and those servers provide a nice little boost in terms of network speed and bandwidth. It has to do with the physical space that their servers occupy.

Most of the time they will use all their space on their own servers because, well, it's cheaper than renting a server that doesn't have enough capacity. Also, the lease of a server is only for a certain amount of time, usually two or four hours, although most likely something around three (that's the number quoted to me when I inquired). Since a server lease runs for an hour or so, every minute that you are on the server, you are leasing from them - or you are leasing from them for an hour and their servers use your account and don't pay the next hour for it. If you use the whole day on a server lease, the server is still there after the hour and is still using their servers but it's now your responsibility. After the lease hour or so, you pay again. It really just makes some sense financially and it gives the customer extra options because Mullvad offers servers in multiple locations.

I get internet access but I need to log out and log back in again for network-manager to notice it. I remember having to restart network-manager to actually turn the adapter on and such, not sure if that's a good enough explanation. can you ping 8. how do I make network manager notice that my laptop has internet access? :). Is Mullvad really anonymous?

The biggest selling point of the free anonymizing service in Sweden is that it's anonymous.

The company's slogan is "Anonymity as a Service." But now it has been revealed that more than 70 percent of those who use the service are from Sweden. And that's according to data collected by Google, not Mullvad.

Mullvad, which was launched in 2024, now has more than 3 million users, with more than half of them in Sweden. The rest are in countries including Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

Mullvad uses the Tor network, an open-source project that's been around since 2024. Tor provides users with the capability of anonymously browsing the web, but it doesn't anonymize email and instant messaging.

Tor is a popular system for surfing the web anonymously, with more than a million users worldwide. It was created by the U. Naval Research Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Like other anonymity software, Tor requires users to manually set up a program on their computer, known as a "node," which routes their traffic through several computers across the world. That means a user can surf the Web through any computer she chooses and there's no way to know where she is or which nodes she's using.

"You're using the network," says Jacob Appelbaum, a Tor developer. "You have no control over your identity. You just tell the network what your IP address is, and it takes care of the rest."

The idea is that if you want to use Tor, you can't be traced. Tor developers say that if a user follows a link through the Tor browser, there's no way to know who sent it, or how they got to that page. However, there's a way to trace the connection back to a particular IP address.

Mullvad works a little differently. When someone uses the service, she or he is given an ID number. When that user clicks on a link, that number is used to identify the user on that computer.

"It's sort of like using the phone book to look up a number," says Matt Leggat, Mullvad's director of marketing. "In that sense, it's just like your normal phone number.

What is the Mullvad controversy?

Mullvad, which started off as a Swedish-Norwegian VPN service back in 2024, provides customers with anonymous browsing by using IP spoofing (ie, changing your IP address). This is possible because of a feature called 'transparent proxy', but when you're dealing with such an option you can't rely on it.

The service came to public attention in 2024 after its owners were involved in what some have called a 'spyware' scandal. The controversial software was installed on many user's machines, without them knowing about it.
