A couple of weeks ago I got a surprise in the mail: a USB drive filled with the software to configure my router.

I had ordered it from Amazon at the beginning of the year, but I waited until now to open it. After all, it took me a few weeks to figure out how to configure the router with it, and when I had finished, I had realized I'd forgotten to write a tutorial, so now was the time.

I've written about the various ways to do this before, and I'll start off with what I think is the most convenient option (though NordVPN also offers a tool called the Router-config interface). The one thing you have to know is that it's possible to configure the router yourself if you have the software on your router itself. This means it's better if you do not use the NordVPN configuration tool, because you won't get any help with the configuration or the setup.

After downloading the client software, plug it into your router's USB port, run the software, and then wait for the installation to be done. I always recommend making a clean installation if you haven't used your computer before, but of course, don't forget to save your passwords and other data if you want to make any changes to your setup later on.

I used a fairly typical Asus router with a USB 3.0 port: Asus RT-AC56U AC-3100, and a router that wasn't too outdated. And if you have a router with two Ethernet ports, you can use that one instead.

The first thing I checked after I was done was to add the router's hostname to the NordVPN server lists. You can add the name as just the name, like nordvpn.net, or add the prefix or suffix to make it more readable, like nordvpn.net/something.

The purchase process with Mullvad is easy, I purchased the full premium service which costs 9.95, and within about a minute (if I recall correctly) I had a VPN server running. I can't say it's perfect. You can't buy a subscription to a server without having a server, but if you buy the entire Mullvad service that's not an issue. We can discuss that later in the article.

Can I trust Mullvad?

I've been using Mullvad for about 3 months now, and am very happy with their service.

But can I trust them to be reliable? My internet provider is currently a bit slow on the uptake of IPv6. Mullvad has agreed to move over to IPv6, but their service remains completely IPv4-only, even when they claim that they're in the middle of switching.

So I've decided to let them know that I'm very happy with their service, but I also want to tell them that I'm not at all confident that I can rely on them moving to IPv6 - they've said that they're in the middle of doing so, but it doesn't seem to be happening. In particular, the site still says: All of our servers are IPv4. We are testing our new IPv6 servers, which will be ready soon.

It's not that they're saying that they haven't switched yet, it's just that they don't say that they're actually switching. I can't find any information about how they're switching - I can see the switchover happening, but I'm not seeing a sign that it's been done. So ? Am I being paranoid? Are there other providers who have told me that they're switching and yet not actually done the switch? Mullvad is in the process of switching IPv6 to IPv4. IPv6 addresses are not going to be used as long as IPv4 addresses are still available. Your best bet is to use both IPv4 and IPv6. If you need to do IPv4 only, try one of the VPN providers. I would not rely on Mullvad for anything. They will say anything to get your business. They are nothing more than a middle man who will take your money and give you a crappy service. Do not pay for a vpn from Mullvad, there are plenty of cheap providers out there.
