What is Plex TV and how does it work?

Plex provides a service that allows you to stream media from your computer directly to your TV using an over the top (OTT) network such as Netflix or YouTube TV. Plex's free software makes it easy to browse and search for files saved on your computer including TV shows, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks. If you own a smart TV then you can use Plex to stream directly to your TV wirelessly. Or you can use Plex to remotely control your TV from your computer or smartphone. You can even save content to play offline.

Plex is also available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets as well as the Xbox One, Fire TV, Mac, Android TV, and Apple TV and supports hundreds of channels with an OTA tuner that works anywhere in the US. How much does it cost? The monthly fee for Plex TV varies from company to company depending on what packages they offer. For example, some companies charge one-time fees for their products while other charge monthly fees. I don't recommend this approach because you need to purchase services multiple times throughout your Plex TV lifetime.

Most Plex providers don't offer free trials to find out if the service is a good fit before you commit to the full subscription. However, Plex says you can try out all their premium services for one month without paying anything after entering your email address and verifying your account.

I use the Plex Player. Why are there options to access other sources and ways to access my media and Plex Player doesn't work? Because Plex gives you the option to access more than one source at once, the Plex TV and Server (depending on device) will display this option together called Plex Tiles. You have the option of adding tiles for third-party apps like Google Photos, Photoshelter, Shutterfly, Overcast, and Evernote.

I use the Netflix on Windows and Mac apps but they didn't work. What do I need to do? Plex has a section on their website for troubleshooting, but the quick solution is to uncheck the box that displays Allow other video players to run as soon as you start streaming which can be found by searching your Plex home page for troubleshooting. If this doesn't fix your issue, you'll want to contact Plex support.

Is Plex free on smart TVs?

Plex on smart TVs is very new, and for the most part it's not compatible with all of the TV manufacturers. If you're looking for Plex on a smart TV, here are the current supported models. Samsung smart TVs. Samsung doesn't have any official Plex support yet, but Plex is available for some of its smart TVs. You can watch media from your computer on your TV through a Plex server, which you can set up on your PC or Mac. To start, open the Plex app on your TV and go to the 'Manage' tab. Scroll down to the 'Streaming Services' section and tap on the 'Add Service' button.

Add the URL for your Plex server. When you add the URL, make sure you use the 'http' protocol.

When you have your Plex URL, you can access it on your TV. If you don't have your Plex server, you can still watch media on your TV, but you'll need to download the media yourself.

The official Plex website for the Samsung TV has instructions on how to get Plex working on your TV. LG smart TVs. There's no official Plex support for LG smart TVs yet, but Plex has a web app that works on LG smart TVs. You can use the web app to add a Plex server on your computer and then access the server on your TV. The web app works on the LG Internet Apps page, but it's not possible to access the web app without a PC or Mac. In order to get Plex working on your TV, you'll need to download the web app and then use it to add a Plex server. Google smart TVs. Google has a web app for its smart TVs, but there's no official Plex support. Plex isn't available as an app on Google's TV Store yet, but you can download the web app from the Plex website and then use it to access the Plex server. This will work on a range of Google TV models, including the new version of the OnHub.

Can I run Plex on a smart TV?

It is quite possible that you don't have much choice in the matter, but if you want to be able to access all your personal media using Plex, your TV, and a browser, you may have just found out why. So let's look at what you need to be able to do that, and why it is easy to make it happen.

If you do not have many smart TVs on your network and you cannot get them to do anything else, I suggest that you not worry about it for now. You will not need to do anything special to be able to run Plex on the television.

However, if you do have smart TVs and other devices in your home connected to your home network, or even if you only have a smart TV and you don't have an internet connection that is fast enough to use Netflix or a website, then you will need to connect your PC or Mac to your smart TV with a Chromecast dongle. That means that you will need to buy another device to go with the smart TV. The fact that you are getting one of the best 4K TVs does not matter: just like your new smartphone or tablet, you will need to choose one of the two:

You can get a Chromecast dongle (or two). You can get a Wi-Fi extender. So now you can understand why you need both: you need to run Plex on the TV but you also need to stream content to the TV from your computer over the local network. For that, you need to get a Chromecast dongle and plug it into the TV, and this is the part where the fun begins.

Using a Chromecast with Plex. As explained in more detail in the documentation of Plex (see How to connect and stream to the TV), you can run Plex on either a Windows, macOS, or Linux PC using the Chromecast dongle. Using your TV remote, you can start playing videos in the app that are on your computer, which will get automatically added to your Plex library. At that point, you can pause or stop playback on the TV.

What can I do with Plex? You can easily get started with Plex by connecting it to your home network via Ethernet cable. Plex is then able to connect to the internet and grab any videos, photos, and music that you have stored on any computers or servers on the network. If you're not connected to the network, you can still manage your files remotely by using the web interface. You can even stream content to your Apple TV via AirPlay.

Once you've set up your Plex server, you can easily create and manage your media collection. For example, you can create folders, drag and drop media files, and add a variety of filters and search criteria. You can also search the Web for any information about the files and videos in your collection.

Using the web interface, you can share videos and photos with friends and family using a free Plex account. If you need to control what your kids or guests can access on your network, you can use the web interface to block access to certain types of files. You can also create smart playlists of all your favorite songs, and then stream that music to any device.
