Is web scraping illegal?

I am currently in the process of writing a web scraper to get a list of all the books I want to buy.

The thing is, it's scraping an amazon page and it will be done automatically. But the thing is, amazon says that this is illegal. And the site does not allow any automated scraping.

The website does have a captcha that has to be filled out, but I can't get around that. So, what do you guys think? Is it legal or not? I have a friend who does web scraping and he told me it was legal. It is not illegal per se, but it may violate the Terms of Service of the website that you are scraping. If I understand it right, they would probably not sue if I was just doing it to learn how to scrape. But if I scrape to sell them on ebay, or any other commercial website, that would be illegal. So, I don't know if it is legal or not. Thanks! While I've never tried this myself, my understanding is that automated scraping of websites is a no-no, even when there's no monetary gain involved. Whether the sites themselves might be okay with it (or even try to charge you for it), I don't know.

Hello! I was wondering what tools are best for data scraping in Python. I have read on a few sites that the requests module has great support for scraping but I couldn't find anything to back that up. The reason for this is that the site I am trying to scrape doesn't have an RSS feed (which I thought it would since it's a business intelligence tool). I can get info off of it in plain text and it isn't too specific, so I'm wondering if there is a way to use that text to create an RSS feed or get it in an automated way.
