Plex, the free media streaming service from the developers of the popular XBMC software, just quietly launched for Windows and will work with Internet Explorer 10 and up. There is no Plex app yet on Windows, so the user experience will have to be done via the browser; however, Plex does offer a Web interface that's not awful. Plex Media Server (free), which is available for Mac, Windows, Linux, and a variety of other platforms, can handle multiple media servers and is ideal for the high-end users that tend to create massive libraries. It's not likely that anyone is going to make the switch between XBMC and Plex, given the popularity of both.
The only difference between the two is that Plex doesn't offer the full package, as it doesn't offer TV listings and channel guide data, for example, while XBMC offers all of that. The app isn't very hard to use either, and it works as a service that can be accessed in any modern browser on any operating system. Plex also requires no installation, and you can even play music or run video off the cloud, if you really want to.
How Plex streams media is by downloading the latest copy of each file from any online content you choose to stream, with minimal caching, and the rest of the process handled by the server software. As for watching, you can set Plex to play media files with or without transcoding, using the codecs installed in the device that's connected to the internet, plus select which video formats to use (the app uses FFMPEG to perform the actual work of trans-coding video). You can also change media servers from the app itself, something that other apps, like VLC, don't allow you to do.
You can set Plex to automatically detect the correct media server for any file type (video, audio, or even a URL). That means that you can set Plex to auto-manage everything, and that's what we did.
Is there a Plex player app for Windows?
There are quite a few Plex players available for Android, iOS, etc.
, but the lack of a Windows app is a bummer. It would probably add another 50 devices to the family's media library pretty quickly if Plex Player for Windows was available.
Is this something that a developer could build for? I just purchased this on my new PC yesterday and I was wondering this same thing. I can't seem to find anything about Windows development or the reason it might be unavailable. Plex is pretty awesome. I can see this getting used a LOT in families/entertainment rooms where most of the time their Plex is either streaming movies to the TV, their Android or iOS is playing music. I use it often just to put songs on albums and organize them. My wife uses it for the same. Now, if there could be a player app for Win 10 it'd be super great. Maybe something could use that?
You have your work cut out for you. It's pretty much impossible to make a "player" app for any platform. First of all, you need access to the data, which means you have to allow the system to install a certain "protocol handler" that allows software to access and manipulate your data. In addition, in the Plex app, you have to allow another app (like iTunes) to access your data, which requires its own protocol handler, as well. To do all of that in an audio player. Not happening!
If the media server does have the ability to create playlists and manage music from your personal collection, and the client does what I think the above answers are mentioning, they wouldn't have to do anything else. You get free access to an unlimited amount of media, all organized and played through Plex. If you want, you can send these files directly to whatever service you want and they will be downloaded and added. You can share playlists and create your own albums. All in the same app.
Plex apps are free, and that's all you need. I don't get why there is no Plex app for Windows. We already have the best streaming apps for most of our windows based devices. The Roku has a Plex app for all the streaming apps (Plex, Crackle, etc. So it's understandable for the iOS and Android. I get it.but no Plex for Windows? Come on. Let's bring plex to Windows!
Can Plex be used as a media player?
I bought this recently as I have been wanting a 4k television for a while now.
I found it at a local big box store and was able to pick it up.
I installed Plex Media Server on my computer and it worked great. I would stream my Plex Media Server over my wifi to my Roku Premiere 2. I was able to play all of my Plex Media Server content as well as Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, etc. And it all played without any lag or skipping.
I then purchased a new TV and I am now connected to my home network via Ethernet cable. I still have the same Roku Premiere 2 hooked up to the TV as I do not want to have to use Wifi again. I want to be able to use Plex Media Server on my new TV.
When I went to connect Plex Media Server to my TV, it won't let me. It says that the connection was unsuccessful. I have looked up this issue online and a few people are saying it is because Plex Media Server is not a media player.
Am I correct in assuming that Plex Media Server cannot be used as a media player? I want to be able to watch my Plex Media Server content on my new TV using Plex Media Server. Is there any other way that I can accomplish this? Re: ? Plex can not be used as a media player, it's just a client. You need a media player that works with your Roku or other smart TV device to play media. The best way is to buy a media player that has the hardware you want. I have an Apple TV 4K and a Roku.
