Why does my Wi-Fi stop working when I use a VPN?

I've recently installed a VPN on my Raspberry Pi 3.

I use OpenVPN for the connection. When I use it to connect to work (via a wired connection), it works just fine. When I connect to a public Wi-Fi hotspot using the same VPN (or even without a VPN), the internet connection drops out after about 30 seconds and I have to reconnect to work or the Wi-Fi hotspot.

I have confirmed that the problem is not my home router, since I can connect to it just fine using the VPN. I also have a MacBook Pro at work that has no problems when connected to the same network.

I am not using any firewall or other security software on the Raspberry Pi (or my MacBook). Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing the problem? The issue goes away as soon as I disconnect from the VPN or the Wi-Fi network. When I say "it", I mean the Wi-Fi hotspot - my Raspberry Pi still has a good internet connection, just no access to anything online. It gets lost in the noise of everything else. If I switch off the VPN, I can get to everything again.

I am also having a similar issue. I have my Raspberry Pi (and computer) connected to a VPN on my work laptop. When I attempt to connect to a public wi-fi hotspot from my laptop, I cannot connect. I tried the same network configuration for both my laptop and the Raspberry Pi, but I cannot get them to work together.

When I attempt to connect to the wi-fi hotspot from my laptop, I get a "connection timed out" error. The only way I can connect is to switch off the VPN connection on the Raspberry Pi.e. I have switched off my VPN, attempted to connect to the wi-fi hotspot, and switched it back on. I have not been able to make any headway with the network configuration. I do not have any idea how to go about solving the problem.

The issue is the same as yours. When I connect to a hotspot with an openvpn tunnel (with or without the network) I cannot connect because my openvpn/wpasupplicant takes more than 30 secs to start. In my case this is caused by the raspberry pis power consumption.

I've run into exactly this problem, and the issue was my wifi antenna wasn't working correctly. As soon as I replaced the old one with the good one everything worked fine again. I fixed this problem by buying a brand new Apple Wifi Antenna (Apple-certified to work with Macs, iPhones and iPads), just because it works even better than the stock antenna.

I suspect the WiFi antenna on an iPhone may not be compatible with AirPort. Maybe it's just me, but I haven't had much luck with AirPort on my iPhone over the years.
