Can I use Plex as a media player?
I have the following setup on my Mac: Mac Pro 2.8ghz quad-core Intel Xeon, 8GB RAM. And an XTS SATA hard drive connected via USB3. I installed Plex to get Media streaming off of the TV connected to my cable box. Plex is able to get media from this hard drive fine. However, when I stream movies from the hard drive, Plex displays the "The remote file system is not connected." error message. I am able to watch live TV just fine but I would like to be able to playback movies as well. I would also like to create playlists of shows and movies from the hard drive (using my Apple TV) so I don't have to stream everything from my cable box to the Apple TV. Can Plex be used to play content from the hard drive?
Yes, Plex can work with network drives. Just make sure that you've enabled that feature in the Plex app. Here's how to do it:
Open Plex (Start menu > All apps > Plex). Click the gear button (cog icon) in the top right corner. Click "Settings". Click "Connections". Click "Network Settings". Enable "Network Drive". If you want to access your network drive directly from Plex, here's how you do it: open Plex (Start menu > All apps > Plex). Click the gear button (cog icon) in the top right corner. Click "Advanced". Make sure that "Allow from this network" is set to "Always allow" and that "Allow to access media" is set to "Allow for all media." Click OK. Click "Done". Also, if you have multiple network drives, you can select the one you want to access using the left-most dropdown next to "Network Settings".
What is the difference between Plex and Plex media player?
Plex lets you access all your media stored on your computer from your phone, tablet or TV. It's also very easy to set up and install. The only limit is what you can attach to your Plex system.
You can also stream videos from Vimeo, YouTube and Netflix to any of your devices, but you have to stream these through another Plex Media Server or Android app, which is why we prefer Plex Media Player for playing media. We like to watch videos together, but you can watch anything anywhere, just by giving it a simple 'Go' command. There are so many things to choose from, that no matter what you're doing, there's bound to be something to watch.
The main differences between Plex and Plex Media Player are listed below: The type of media being streamed. This will make a big difference if you have a lot of data that you want to stream, or video files that are too large to send over a network. If you have a lot of photos, music or videos on your computer and you want to share this with your friends and family without them having to download it, Plex Media Server would be the way to go. But, if you only need to play movies or videos on your mobile or desktop devices, Plex Media Player would be ideal.
Streaming media types. The best media streaming service you'll ever use is undoubtedly Netflix, which offers movies and TV shows to stream. It works on all operating systems and has the largest selection of content in any media streaming service available. We recommend this in case you want to watch Netflix on a wide range of devices.
Other services include Vimeo, YouTube and Spotify. With Plex, you can stream any type of media, not just these three.
File sizes. How much space are you using on your computer? How much do you have left? You'll need to figure this out before deciding how many devices to sync. Plex's built-in storage means you don't need to worry about that. However, if you do plan on storing any videos or photos on your Plex server or Android device, you'll need some more space.
Why is Plex not illegal?
Plex Media Server is licensed.
The reason that many people don't understand this is because the license is for The individual user, with an emphasis on individual rather than person.
So if a server running Plex is used in a corporate network it is covered by the license. If a person downloads the app and then passes that to someone else then that person is The individual user who is covered by the license. There is no licensing on the app itself.
But we found that many were surprised when it was pointed out that the company (Plex) was not actually being charged by the copyright holder. The media companies seem to expect Plex to act as some kind of legal guardian.
This article is for those wanting to know more about the situation from our perspective. There are no new questions, there is just further clarification of already existing answers. If you want to talk about the legal side of it though you should join a legal forum, like our forums on Reddit or here on Hacker News, or our legal support forum.
How has the Plex Licensing been handled in the past? This has all come about because of a misunderstanding over licensing for the apps. We originally were planning on being paywall free, in terms of having any kind of licensing. Because we have no paywall we wanted to avoid this kind of licensing.
So were working on a license which was completely open source which would mean that we wouldn't have to worry about any kind of licensing either. There was a point where a lawyer saw this license and he felt that we should make it explicit that were paywall free so there was no need to worry about licensing for the app itself. So went ahead with this license and it became the main license for the app. It has to say paywall free but we also have the option to use a license which comes with some sort of restrictions. We have done very little to date because our main focus is on improving our open source client.
What was the confusion with licensing? There are two licenses for the actual Plex app. One is called the Individual License and it is a very permissive license, which basically says that you can do anything you want. You could make copies of the software that you own.
Is Plex a good media player?
Yes!
It plays all my video files and has a ton of plugins. They can control your TV, make you a pizza, make you take better selfies, find out what's inside that thing in your pocket, etc. I use this plugin whenever there's a party or I'm at a place with a lot of noise that prevents me from getting good sound or video. I'm not even ashamed to say it's one of my favorite features because it makes me feel more like I'm at home. Plex lets me access my files remotely using Windows or Mac apps and it can control any streaming device (including the Roku) over Wifi.e. This is really my number one reason why I love Plex: You can play ALL media, all devices, without being connected to your TV's input (just plug it in to the TV port, wait 15 minutes, and the whole household's movies will be ready). My only concern is they've discontinued the Apple tv plugin (and they haven't stated if that plugin will continue to work), but otherwise I can't ask for anything more! I still have a ton of plugins on there. There are so many to experiment with and some I haven't even discovered yet.
What kind of things does Plex Media Server do? I don't know why these are so hard to find. I looked around for videos about the things it can do, and I think even more videos should come out like this one: What is Plex Media Server and Why Is It Worth Using? Yes, it is, but there's so much more to it than just "watch Netflix". You can see more things that could be interesting about it: Why I Love Plex. I can access all my files (and their settings) remotely using Windows and Mac apps. The app can be accessed and controlled using wifi, which is great since it turns my Roku into a second screen where I can change my media, and it's easy for everyone to set up. They can do so many cool things with Plex: Turn off all the lights at night, play music, order food, run my washing machine, etc.and with that, the Roku makes a lot more sense!
