How much did an astromech droid cost?
This piece has been sitting in my drafts folder for ages as I couldn't decide which parts of the game to write.
After getting the feedback that there were actually a number of questions, I decided that this probably wouldn't be quite as bad as writing an entire essay and I pulled it together.
I am not going to include links to any of the information, because I've found that if you are just Googling for information for yourself you find lots of good stuff on the web. All the data is available in the 'source' section of the post.
The droid market was always one of my favourite things to speculate about when exploring the space stations. One can only guess at how much they cost, but I thought the below might be helpful to people asking, and the first part gives a few examples of cost for certain parts. For simplicity, the cost will always be rounded up to the nearest 10, and so a 500 item would become 550 and so on.
Note - the first cost is the price from the release of the film; the second is what it was the day I made this article, after Lucas got his cut. The numbers presented are the prices from. In addition to this, some of the astromechs that I collected while I wrote this. If I did collect a droid that didn't get included here I won't list it! :P It does appear that the price of other pieces of junk has been increased since this article was written, so you may want to double check the values as I am sure that the prices will be a bit out of date soon.
Here is an approximate list of astromech droids that I own that you can see them on google images here. If you don't have one of those listed and want to see them all just click and it'll bring up a page with links to all of them. You will see in the image gallery that some of the droid components look very similar, and are basically the same price as each other. It might be worth the extra cost to get the specific one listed.
I have not included this as the list of images is just a long version of an Excel spreadsheet and wasn't ideal to type up for me, but it really doesn't need any sort of introduction.
What is the purpose of the astromech droid?
The standard, generic use case for astromech droids is providing a means of.
transporting data or material or carrying an astromech on their shoulder. As such, the astromech droid should be designed to fit into the role, and. Provide the functionality that suits a given role. But astromechs can do so much more than provide transport. There are two other roles that I would like to discuss briefly here - one for a companion droid, and the other for. What I'm calling a "battleroid". Astromech Droid as Companion. An astromech droid is very good for the role of companion, but is it. Possible that the astromech's primary duty is something else? Yes, and. That would be in a battle droid like a Rancor. These are not intended to be "companion" droids, though they serve that function, but something else. In a battle droid, the astromech can have various functions, providing. Support, defense, attack, or something else. For example, in X-wing vs. TIE fighter battle, TIE fighters carry two tactical systems that are called "TIE Interceptors", which includes two red. And green lasers. In X-wing vs. Rebel Fighter battle, X-wings carry two
Lasers that are called "Green Batteries". An X-wing has two astromechs working the Green Batteries for this particular type of attack. What are the differences between Astromech Droid and Rancor? (I think you. Can guess the answer to this one.) An astromech in any role is a tool. There are some very specific reasons why any droid, including the astromech, fits a particular role and there are. Many droid roles. Rancor are "inert objects", and they lack the capabilities to be tools. A droid can do everything a Rancor can do with more accuracy and more capability. As such, the droid can be considered, in this instance, a more suitable tool for being on the shoulder. And a battle droid - like a Rancor - is useless if it lacks a combat-minded astromech working
What Astromech did Obi Wan use?
The dialogue we have in the movie for Obi-Wan is a bit off, I think, but maybe not entirely.
Obi-Wan : You could have destroyed us, you know. That's why we find you so interesting.
And then. Obi-Wan : That was a mistake. I only knew I had it when I saw the price tag.
The first line was most likely a retort on the part of Anakin Skywalker after he found out that Obi-Wan knew about his "mistake". It would be odd that Obi-Wan, knowing that Anakin is a Jedi and not wanting to get Anakin in trouble (by revealing it was a mistake), would say this.
The second line is probably the answer to Anakin's question. He says "I don't know why he said that." Obi-Wan didn't answer, and this was because he was still thinking, as evidenced by his next line.
Obi-Wan : When I left, the boy chose to follow you. He is very. Special.
Obi-Wan didn't really say "He is very special" (he actually said "he is very strange", but we understand what Obi-Wan is saying). He says that Anakin was special and that he thought so because of Anakin's choice.
And at the end of the scene, we hear Obi-Wan talking to Jango Fett in the hangar bay. Obi-Wan : I found him here, on Tatooine. We were made to believe that he died in the conflict, that his pilot's ship, or starfighter, crashed here, but that is not the case.
Obi-Wan doesn't explain why he found Anakin on Tatooine. He says "we" were made to believe this, but he did not know this was not the case. He says that he found Anakin on Tatooine. That's how Obi-Wan is making this up, to tell Anakin something to make him feel better.
What is the most advanced astromech droid?
In the context of canon, a droid isn't "advanced" based on the power level of a particular droid.
In order to be "advanced" in canon terms a robot has to possess some measure of artificial intelligence or reasoning ability. For example, R2D2 can make observations of what others are doing and draw conclusions based on that observation and a few other inputs. By this standard we consider a droide is advanced if they can make similar kinds of observations and deductions.
