What app do I use to control my R2-D2?
I think about this every time I see someone else use a remote to control that big robot.
He has an app! I have never seen anything remotely like an app to control that thing, so I was curious. How can it be done and what are the specs to control?
As of 2025, C. Servo drives seem to have pretty decent tech in them. There are even apps you can use to control them that don't use your iPhone's motion controls or require you to hold the phone sideways.
The remote control can control the pitch & roll of the servo. R2-D2 is a 2-channel device for each arm and the remote control transmits a bit for both.
The servos can tilt, rotate, and move, but I haven't yet found anything that transmits over 2 channels yet. If anybody knows any, please comment.
The iPhone 7 & iPhone 8 models also have touch sensor capability that works with Apple Maps. That means you can move R2 from left to right, up to down, and left to right on y axis only.
To answer my own question, I bought one of these and it works great. The tech is really good but the software and interface suck. In other words, I wouldn't use this for any serious application.
What is the app for Star Wars droids?
You can't get the app.
The good news is that there's an iOS app for Droid users. It's called Star Wars Droid Commander. The bad news is that it sucks.
This was the response from someone who was so enthralled with the App Store game that he actually read some of the reviews. Yes, one of the most ridiculous games in the entire App Store is worth discussing, so much so that we might be calling a Star Wars fan out on this one.
Star Wars droid Commander is a third-person shooter, with a sci-fi theme to it, just like its predecessor. This droid Commander is on a mission to save Padme Amidala from her fate.
Star Wars Droid Commander features a number of characters and vehicles, although they all look rather simple and low-poly in nature. The game is set in Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. You are given different droid companions (also known as Droids) throughout the story, which are necessary for completing missions. You must protect them from harm in order to be successful.
The game takes place after the Battle of Geonosis, which is the fourth installment in the Star Wars prequels. Padme Amidala is sent off into exile, while Anakin Skywalker ends up on the Dark Side of the Force. You are sent on an adventure to find Padme Amidala, and eventually, Anakin Skywalker.
The game takes place entirely in a desert environment, but because the game is so old, all of the textures and surfaces are quite blurry. As a result, you only see brownish images in places, while bright ones are mostly obscured by dark areas. There are a few times where the camera shows you a clear view of the landscape, but most of the time, you are seeing this type of look at the world.
In addition to the graphics issues, the controls also suck. There is an option to play the game with virtual control keys, or via mouse clicks, but this option does not work very well.
The controls suck because you need to move your mouse around in a weird manner. At times, your left mouse button will stop working, even when you move the mouse as far away as possible from your touchpad. If the problem persists, you may need to install the latest drivers on your computer.
What happened to the Star Wars Sphero app?
I got Sphero for my birthday.
I have played with it for a little bit. It's so far just a toy, but I would love to program it and use it with the app.
My question is, is the app gone? I keep getting emails about how to log in, but when I do, nothing happens. I can't even see the robot or the app. Am I missing something?
Yes, the Star Wars Sphero app is not available anymore. It is still possible to get Sphero for a few more weeks, but the app will eventually disappear. Fortunately, you can install the webapp version of Sphero at webapps.starwars.com instead.
That's right. We took Sphero's official mobile app down in early November. After that, only the webapp is available to install for mobile devices.
You can either install the webapp on your Android device using the link above, or you can get the Sphero Kit to create your own webapp on the server running on your network. With this option, you'll need to set up the Sphero API Key and Secret, plus authenticate yourself using your own login information. This allows you to use the robot in the way you want without needing to ask others for their API keys and secrets.
I just want to say thanks for restoring this app. I've been enjoying the game on iOS for about a month now, and then I learned about Sphero and wanted to try it out. I'm glad I finally have, but I'm sad to see the app go. Thanks for bringing it back.
I really enjoyed Sphero. The app was pretty neat, especially when I could program the robot for different levels. However, in general the app wasn't too difficult to learn and use. Plus, there are a lot of other apps available with the same idea as Sphero. I'm not sure what exactly was behind Sphero's failure, but the game is still a nice addition to other iOS Star Wars games out there.
Also, if you're looking for robot kits, I've had success finding them on Amazon and eBay. It's a shame the stores weren't stocking the Sphero robots like they used to, because it would have made things much easier. Overall, great job fixing up the app. It was looking pretty good when you first released it.
