Can you measure speed with iPhone?

Does the iPhone have an internet speed meter?

The iPhone uses Wifi, 3G/4G or both depending on what carrier you subscribe with.

For Wifi it can use Speedtest or it can measure latency. See for more info.

For 3G/4G it just uses whatever the carrier says the speed is (it's not really based on speed). Speedtest has a Wifi connection option, but I don't think you can change the type of connection in speedtest. The fastest iPhone 6s Plus I have is using 3G (1.6mbps) so the average speed will be close to what the carrier says.

Your iPhone will tell you how fast it is if you access the "About this iPhone" page, and it'll tell you what type of connection it is using (if it can tell, which it seems to). If the connection type is "Wifi" it'll say so. If not, it'll just tell you what the connection type is.

Does iPhone have an internet speed test?

So I'm not sure exactly how it works.

However, is there a device or phone with an internet speed test on it, or is it something that we need to install apps for? Can it be tested with any computer at home? If there is no device that can check the internet speed, do you need a device like Ookla? I think it would be great to be able to test my home internet speed and figure out if I'm paying too much.

Yes, the iPhone 4s has an app for this. You can use it from any WiFi capable iOS device.

That being said - many ISPs don't advertise their network speeds. They simply advertise the download limit that you pay for, because it makes more sense.9MB. The only thing you're actually paying for is that data transfer, not network speed.

If they advertise "Up to 6MB," then your connection isn't worth much. (Of course, since it's capped, that only makes sense, and it might only cap when you reach 6MB, rather than 7.)

The only way to tell if the ISP advertises their true network speeds is to call them directly and ask. The iPhone 4s also has the feature to test the speed of other iPhones/iPads (and also desktop/laptop computers). I don't believe the iPhone 4s tests your internet connection to another computer at home. I believe that's still done by plugging into Ethernet.

This is correct - your wifi needs to be setup on your wireless router to allow your device to communicate with it over that WiFi signal. Then once you are on wifi - it will ask for a username and password for your router.

Can you measure speed with iPhone?

No, you can't.

All iPhone does is take a photo of whatever the sensor sees and then displays it. That's it. What you measure is its frame rate, as it takes a picture and displays it. Now that the sensor is good enough to take a picture of a moving object it becomes possible to actually measure the speed of the object. You need to use some kind of encoder - a device which makes something mechanical move at a regular interval. Then you set the iPhone to take a picture every x second and the device to make the mechanical thing move at the same interval.

If you do that the two measurements are the same, as they are both done with the same accuracy. But as the iPhone has no way of knowing how far from the sensor the object was when it took the picture it doesn't know what speed it was moving when it took the picture. You can't measure the speed of something with an iPhone. You can measure the rate at which the iPhone takes pictures of something and display them.

A video camera can measure the speed of something, but not through the iPhone. I would think that this is a bit trickier than it seems. There are multiple ways in which you can interpret the answer. The first one is "yes", but then you have to define what exactly "yes" means. To me "yes" means that it is possible to measure the speed of something with an iPhone. The next question is: do I mean that I can measure the speed of the phone while it's moving? Yes or no?
In case you want to measure the speed of the iPhone while it's moving, I don't believe that it's possible. I suspect that Apple would not provide a speedometer in the Settings app. There's an app called Speedometer Pro that allows you to track the speed of your iPhone while you're driving. However, it can only track the speed of your iPhone while you're driving. It cannot track the speed of the car.
