Which is the best internet speed meter?

Which is the best app for checking internet speed?

I'm downloading all the latest tech and I would like to track which of the apps is the fastest for checking internet speed.

It's fine if it doesn't have a timer feature. What do you think? Thanks

In my experience as an avid gamer who downloads/streams content (mostly music), I've been with Speedtest.net since the summer of 2025. They're still the go-to people and most developers use their API as it's so easy to access and reliable (at least compared to others). Since the Speedtest.net network now covers pretty much the entire planet, it's the best way to check in a country that isn't on the other side of the world.

But I would never pay for something with limited features - especially as they offer free tools online. SpeedTest.net or any download test apps has the best data collected from the biggest and best internet networks available worldwide. There are no limitations. If one was to pay to check their internet speed it would be a limited service because it wouldn't account for local bandwidth speeds.

My guess is that people are saying that they used one app because it showed them their internet speed. However, many people don't realize that it measures the speed of your local carrier and not your ISP. I just checked and I have 50 Mbps wired to my house from FiOS. The first app I tried wasn't very good at showing me how fast or slow that was because it measured the speed of my ISP (which is Verizon FIOS) instead of the network speed between my PC and the ISP's server. It took me quite awhile to figure this out.

Another thing is that the bandwidth speed shown by some of the other apps are more useful than real life, because some people (like me) share connection speed to things like streaming media, gaming, and cloud storage. Speedtest.net makes it easy to upload pictures of your network speed so you can compare it on forums like Woot, Reddit, and many others. If you're using FiOS, you should know what kind of speed you are getting out of their network; for some people, that info is useful.

Which is the best internet speed meter?

Hi, I just recently bought the net meter in the uk and got very happy with it.

However, now a few days after installed it. I noticed that although the meter speed is great, when I open up my internet explorer all my webpages dont load anymore. I have a wired ethernet connection. It has never happened before even after reinstalling the meter. Could it be the cause of my problem?

Best regards. Herman Thank you for your answers. But do you happen to know why did this problem come up? My internet speed is still the same. Just the fact that when opening up internet explorer all the pages are taking me longer than expected to load has caused my problem? (I was also wondering if this can be the reason why I got no pop ups in my net meter?)

Also thank you for the advice of not using the meter from the uk. I am in the netherlands so I will not be ordering the uk meter again. Is it safe enough to use a uk meter in another country?

First of all, if you want to use any internet speed meter - in no matter what browser, or platform, it is recommended that you update the Internet Explorer browser and the Windows operating system in order to make sure that the performance and stability is maximized. Also, we have been receiving several emails complaining about slow speed of loading times. This is usually due to incompatibilities between the Internet Explorer software and other softwares and tools which are linked to the Internet browser.

Please be patient and keep checking for our updates to your Windows and Internet Explorer as they can help you resolve this issue. You can always contact us if you experience issues. We hope to hear from you soon,

This is the only way to make sure you will not get any unexpected results. Hi Herman, I have not experienced any loading problems as long as I was using the meter. But I recently installed IE 9 and I am experiencing lots of speed and pop up errors! Can you please confirm if the meter works for those specific browsers too? I tried changing them but then the pop up problem came back! I am not using the meter though, I am using Net Meter.

I suggest you uninstall the Meter first. Then re-install Internet Explorer 9. There is a new version of IE 9.

Is there a way to measure my internet speed?

How do I get the maximum bandwidth speed possible?

Can anyone give me a list of sites that I should use to measure bandwidth and internet speed? Does anybody have any other great tips and ideas about maximizing my internet bandwidth speed.

The only way is if you get a device from your ISP that will measure it. If that is not possible, then you'd have to take their word that what they say is correct. The problem is that different ISPs sell their bandwidth at different prices.

I have some recommendations for things to try (see below), and the only way to be sure is to try them and see. For reference. My Internet Service Provider says I am getting 9.23 Mbps down / 0.88 Mbps up. With certain apps, Firefox will show me 5.8 Mbps down / 0.7 Mbps up.

My test machine is always connected via wifi with a DSLAM. You may want to do an initial test by doing simple tasks on the machine at home, and see how well the results are for that test. You may also be interested in knowing what your provider is charging for their service. Some things that could increase your speed: Get a wired connection to your modem. Connecting via wifi to a wireless AP or router increases latency and drops. This should be a default option as some broadband ISPs offer wired connections.

Get some bandwidth increasing devices (or routers) for when you use 3G. Change DNS servers to see if that makes any difference. On my local area network, we tried that and it was better, but not much.

You can also just test by downloading a simple file with a browser - Firefox comes with built-in tools to check network traffic. A common simple test is to go to one of these sites: For most people with a broadband connection and no gaming or other resource hogging requirements, the result (provided they have enough data limit) shows the average amount of data being used and the average speed. Of course, you want to be able to view the page without buffering.
