It's animated kids show with a pretty crazy premise: a group of young kids are thrown into an alternate dimension, where they meet all kinds of weird stuff (for instance, two of the kids end up as dragons and the other two grow to be huge, lumbering beasts). At the same time, they're trying to find their way back home.

I was hooked by episode one, and binge-watched the entire first season, even when it was still airing. While I knew I should probably stop before I finished, I couldn't help myself. Then I finally stopped on the last episode, and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I found it even more awesome than the first time.

The show's premise is absurd, but it works because it's smart. And not just smart in a clever or cute way, but smart in a kind of clever and cute way that feels like a grown-up version of The Magic School Bus.

Let's go over the show's premise, and why I think it's so great: The premise isn't the point. If you read the description of the show, you'll notice that it says A mystery adventure series for children, which makes sense because kids love mysteries and adventures and all that. But the main appeal of the show for me is not that the premise is interesting (though it is). Rather, it's the idea that the premise doesn't matter: the point of the show is not what the kids do in the episodes, but what they do to each other. It's about friendship.

In my experience, the most fun shows are the ones that don't focus on any one element: instead, the focus is on the relationship between all the characters. And what makes The Mysterious Benedict Society work is that it's one of those shows. Friendship matters. In this show, friendship is much more important than any one thing. And this is why I like it so much. The most powerful parts of life are not the things that happen to us, but the things that happen between us.

And a lot of the time, these are the hardest things to have.

I was reading Mystery & Mayhem #2 (June 2013) and just about to start A Secret So Deadly (my 13th M&M and first M&M novel of 2013). Then I opened my bookmarks to the right of the book and lo and behold, the cover reads Mysterious Benedict Society.

So, it looks like Disney pulled its Mystery & Mayhem line - maybe before the end of 2025. There's no mention of the Mysterious Benedict Society in the back of the issue, and there's no new author on the cover (which is also strange). I know some authors don't mind, but I thought this was standard practice - a big splashy news release with a photo of the new author on the cover so you could see who he was. So, when I opened my ereader (Kindle), I expected to see the new M&M cover with the new author on it.

The only thing I can think of is that Mystery & Mayhem #2 is out of print. Or it's been pulled from sale. But, I haven't found anything yet.

Disney should have at least let us know what was going on so we could have cancelled our M&M book order. This kind of thing doesn't happen too often. It's annoying.
