With today's announcement that the reboot of Star Trek Into Darkness is in full effect, the Internet has been awash in speculation over who will be cast as the new Spock.

We are of course talking about Zachary Quinto, a man who is quite likely to be wearing a black and red Starfleet uniform for the next couple of years. This post is not about him, or the rest of the ensemble cast, or any other character currently under speculation. This post is going to be more of a love letter to Spock himself, and his creator, the late Leonard Nimoy.

I am a huge Star Trek fan. I have seen all of the movies, a great deal of the TV show, and almost every single episode of the original series. I can name off quite a few original series episodes just by heart, along with many favorites of the recent reboots, as well as various spin-offs. In fact I probably know more Trek history and trivia than 99.99% of the general public, or even the people who attend these things (that's why most Star Trek conventions have become so awful in recent years). There are more than 500 pages on my bookshelf. A lot of it includes notes, ideas and theories for original and fan written stories. So, obviously, while no one in their right mind would ever suggest Kill all Klingons, Make 'Star Trek' more 'realistic,' or Stop trying to make sense, I do think very deeply about what I watch, and what I enjoy, even though it often makes me very cranky and miserable. Because I do enjoy things, and because I sometimes get it so wrong, I'm going to share with you what I think about one of my most favored TV characters and his creator. Kirk goes on to say that they would say he wasn't even Starfleet material before.

I'm going to start with my favourite question! I was wondering if you and Saldana ever got a chance to see each other during the production of the film. You had both gone through the time change while filming in Canada. Were there any times when you were able to interact or did you keep yourself to yourselves?

"I was there for about the first three months of shooting. After that I flew back and forth to Vancouver a couple of times. The one time were together, we had dinner with the cast and crew. That was a long time ago."

There were a couple of times I was with Zoe and that's about it. I remember I did get to meet her husband while I was there, that's about it. I don't remember the first few months that were there, but then I was in Vancouver, so I remember going back and forth and doing a little bit of that. But no, I don't remember much.

Okay, so we wanted to know how long it took you to get used to the time changes and being out of your comfort zone. So, if we can start with what we've read in the book, it was a big change for you. What was it like to go from being on the set in Los Angeles, to suddenly being on the set in Canada?

"There was definitely a part of me that was like, 'This is a little weird. This is not real.' I mean, that happens when you're in the middle of a very structured show that has lots of rituals.
