How do I get Google to work with VPN?

I want to use a VPN so that I can browse the web securely.

I've been reading and trying different ways of doing it, but I'm still stuck.

I am using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS. I have a vpn connection on my local network, but I cannot connect to it from outside my network.

I can ping the vpn server, and if I leave the VPN on, I can browse the internet with no problems. I really wonder why Google isn't working with VPN?

I want to use VPN as a secure connection to access web pages on the internet. So I tried to install OpenVPN and have successfully set up the server. The client that I am using is "Cisco AnyConnect". If you're in a public Wi-Fi environment and connecting with a VPN, the Wi-Fi connection may be blocked by the network. This could be either because it's a captive portal or because the access point doesn't allow VPNs. The latter could happen if you're connecting with a company's corporate VPN or a public Wi-Fi hotspot.

In either case, you won't be able to connect to the internet without unblocking the Wi-Fi connection first. Check the WiFi Settings app on your iPhone to see if it's blocked by the captive portal.
