Do Wi-Fi routers have passwords?

The answer is, no they don't. Some routers do provide a login option, but most of them don't. And even if the login option is available, it usually can only be changed by calling customer service and is generally very difficult to manage from within the router, especially when it comes to setting up new user accounts. A Wi-Fi password is a unique device identifier or Wi-Fi key that is associated with your router, so Wi-Fi keys are used as another way to identify Wi-Fi devices. In previous versions of the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) standard, Wi-Fi passwords were required in order to configure a WPS network. But now Wi-Fi security is so advanced that a single shared password between a router and WPS-capable device (typically your smartphone or tablet) is all that's needed to start and complete a WPS connection.

As a result, there is now no need for a Wi-Fi password on most routers. The few that do have passwords still use them as access points for guest devices, like the Apple TV.

Once you have completed the Wi-Fi password configuration, the router is then able to create its own Wi-Fi network without a Wi-Fi password in WPS-only mode. If you are unable to accept the default Wi-Fi password, simply delete the Wi-Fi password that was created for you and create a new Wi-Fi password for your router when prompted.

The default Wi-Fi access password is the factory-reset default something like 12345678. For example, if you connect the router to your modem and you're trying to connect through the ethernet port on your router to your PC or laptop, then all you have to do is plug an ethernet cable from the port on the back of the router to an Ethernet jack on the back of your computer (on the motherboard). Once the Wi-Fi settings page on the router comes up, the password might be set to the factory default of 12345678.

On some models, however, you need to change the password from the factory default so you can connect to the Internet. Many routers come with a label that says something like WPS password right above the port used to connect to the router. So if your router doesn't come with any labels or documentation and the port it's plugged into doesn't say WPS password, then it's probably not the factory default password.
