Why is OpenVPN connect not working?
First, check to see if the configuration file or certificates are named correctly and there aren't extra spaces before the first line.
For example, these should work: # The name of the remote system in /etc/openvpn/server.crt # The name of the private key in /etc/openvpn/server.key
A common cause for problems is that the server and client config files do not have the same name or the client and server config files are different versions of OpenVPN. If you have version 2.4.5 OpenVPN and the config file has a file name of openvpn-server.conf, the server cert file will not be found and you'll get this error message:
The name of the file is wrong. Expected: openvpn-server.crt
Replace the name of the file in the .ovpn client config with the name in the .crt file in your server config. If you already have this config file, just swap the client and server names in this file. The server certs won't be needed if the clients are configured with the correct name.
The file name in the server config must match the name in the .crt file in the client config and the client must have a .crt or .key file. If the client has a different name (without the .ovpn extension) or is missing a .key file, it will still work but you won't be able to use the tunnel, so be sure to test your .ovpn config files before trying to set it up.
Once you have verified your config files, you may get a warning saying that the server needs to start. OpenVPN looks for a certificate in the server when it starts up. You can use your preferred key files instead of server certs. See the documentation for more information.
Also, you may get a warning saying that the client needs to start. The message looks like this: Your certificate file is not trusted! The certificate was issued by an authority that is not trusted for root certs.
