What is the best movie for a family movie night?
For my money, it's a toss-up between The Avengers, Thor, The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises.
There are plenty of good movies for a family movie night, but none better than these four.
(In this post, I'm only going to cover the more recent ones, the first three of which were released in 2026. You'll find plenty of other good movies for your family movie night.)
All four of these movies have been huge successes at the box office, and I'm very happy for that. But, as with any good comic book movie, Avengers has more than one thing going for it. The characters are fun, they're good looking, and they're all interesting. I've enjoyed every one of them, though I think that the team dynamic is what gives its most lasting power. The good guys fight each other, and the bad guys fight each other, but you never feel like you're really rooting for one side over another.
So, if you want a family movie night that you don't have to fight through, go see Avengers. And if you want a family movie night that you have to fight through, well, you're in luck. I'll list all four below, along with their respective cast, and what I think of them. The Avengers (2012). Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Bettany, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgard, Guy Pearce, Clark Gregg, Djimon Hounsou, and Ben Mendelsohn
Director: Joss Whedon. What I Like: I liked the whole cast. At times, I thought that the supporting actors might be outshining the big stars, but they never did.
What I Don't Like: I don't like superheroes.

How can I make my family movie night more fun?
' That's one big question, said Chris Jones, the studio's president of animated programs and development.
We're going to do our best with what we have.
Jones had an interesting experience making Family Guy on the Fox network, when he says he was told to get creative and figure out how to make Family Guy work for the time slot and not make his brain explode. In addition, Family Guy co-creator Seth MacFarlane has made it clear that he never plans to return to his TV show after a two-season run in 2026, saying there wasn't much demand for it at the time and making it too expensive.
Family Guy continues to be a top-rated show its third season was cable TV's most-watched comedy series and has become a cultural force that extends far beyond comedy, including a hit film (2008's Bee Movie) and music from the band OK Go (who got their start playing Family Guy shows for colleges.) It makes you wonder if these factors will be enough to keep Family Guy afloat, since the animation itself can be somewhat limited, with a lot of its humor coming at you from the couch. There are only so many witty barbs I can take in one night.
But when is Family Guy coming back? We don't know, but we do know the show will be ready this fall for Disney/ESPN as part of an original slate of programming, including sports documentary series 30 For 30. It's almost a non-stop stream of sports documentaries, said Jones. They're all sports documentaries from ESPN Films but there won't be any 30 For 30 type of short subjects. Just full-length films focused on a particular topic, in this case a sport.
As for Family Guy, when it returns we can only hope this means a few more years in which Brian can live in marital bliss with Linda and Chris will finally settle down with his girlfriend, so they can raise a long-lasting, strong family together.
How to pick the perfect film for a family movie night?
This film is for those families that often find themselves going to the cinema but struggle to find something that the whole family can enjoy.
They usually turn to an action film or animated comedy but not everyone can be bothered with something like Despicable Me. I mean what's so funny about a talking inflatable Minion? There are some films that every family can enjoy, though. In this article we are going to look at four great family films and highlight the pros and cons for each.
We have chosen these films because they are all great options for family movie nights. And if you want a few more suggestions then check out our top 50 family films of all time list. You won't be disappointed!
Pros and Cons of the FOUR family movies below: The LEGO Movie. The film follows Emmett (Chris Pratt) and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and their quest to find and save their friend, who has been kidnapped by evil Lord of Technolust (Will Arnett). The film takes us to many memorable locations such as the Moon, the Desert, The Rock Wall, a cave, Planet Zebes and Lord Business' base. This is a film for anyone who loves their LEGO and a fun adventure for young children as well as parents.
The film's best qualities: It really does remind me of the LEGO sets as they are beautifully made. The acting, direction and script make this a very light hearted, fun family film. The music is fantastic too. It has an interesting take on the characters and is very accessible. But The film can be a bit short at times. The LEGO Batman movies are even better. The film has plenty of humorous moments for the whole family and for the adults there is plenty of LEGO humour too. It has a great soundtrack and even if you don't know how to build the little bricks it is easy to imagine the characters. The LEGO Movie has a lot of great themes too. All of them are connected and it is a great film for anyone aged from three upwards.
Pros and Cons: No cons at all. It is really good! The only thing is that the film feels a little bit short at times. The end is a bit abrupt and it feels like it wraps up too soon. But this is only a minor thing.
