Is DIRECTV offering a 50% discount to existing customers?

If so, they can save a ton of money by cancelling their current package and switching over.

I was surprised they did that. I think it's because they thought the market would have contracted by now.

And I think there is a chance that most customers who are in the 25-39% bracket might be moving back to cable. It's one thing if it's your old channel lineup, but it could also be that you want DVR and other stuff.

There's a bunch of other new packages with less than 20 channels. Some people on the boards say they will be cancelled as of tomorrow, or at least within the next month. My guess is that is going to be a few months before anyone notices that they are gone. So, a lot of them will probably be dead within 12 months.

I think they will be a little more careful when offering price discounts to new customers. So, there will be no cramming.

As for the 50% price cut, that could also mean that they are selling fewer boxes to new customers. That does happen during busy periods.

@SteveH. This would also suggest that the price they charge new customers is already set. It's based on those numbers, and it's cheaper than what they are charging all customers, even existing ones.

Yes! The pricing starts out very low to keep people from jumping ship, but then after they are a customer for a while it starts to creep up until it hits the market demand rate for the product. They are not setting the price to get new customers. They are setting the price to keep current customers.

I got off the fence and started watching about 6 months ago. I cancelled my Dish Network service and have been completely satisfied with the DIRECTV service and the price. I am a little concerned that, if DirecTV goes through with their price increase, it might make them unattractive in comparison to the Dish Network service I just cancelled.

Thanks for chiming in Jim and SteveH. I didn't know if you both were saying the same thing. Since SteveH thinks the price will creep up after first year, I think he sees no problem giving a discount, especially if they're going to be losing customers overall anyway.
