But for the sake of argument, let's say you have your home wired with fiber optics which are capable of a whopping 4 gigabits per second (Gbps) or 40,000 MBPS. Are you good to go with this much speed? Again, no. If you stream at 30 channels at once on a 30 MBPS connection, each stream will take about 2.9 milliseconds - 2 microseconds, which isn't a moment too soon. To put that in perspective, two seconds is 60000 ms - or 1/100th of a second.

If your TV is set to 25.2 progressive scan (which has 16:9 aspect ratio and 576 x 480 horizontal resolution) and directv streams two 30 channel networks using HD, then you're looking at 20,800,000 bits per second or a grand total of 3.28 Gigahertz - and we already knew you wouldn't have broadband that high in a lifetime. I am currently receiving my second free HD service (in addition to the already existing one). I believe I will have to give a different zip code for the new one. I already gave my current one.

Also, can anyone tell me if my service, as of March, will go up to HD? I had a hard time getting answer on my first query. Yes, they do have a Senior Discount. When I called they gave me my age and zip code and then they showed me a discount screen where I could enter in the number of years I had been a customer and my zip code. Then I was told I could sign up for the discount. However, they said they only offer the discount during the 1st month of new service. However, you can always call their customer service and they will do anything they can to help you.

You are correct. I called last night and they would not tell me the price but they did confirm that they do have a senior discount. I called yesterday and was told there was no discount available for us. We are now on their HD plan. They said they would call us this afternoon with a rebate check.
