I'm already a customer with Dish Network. Why would I want to switch to DIRECTV? Like all the major satellite providers, the big difference between Dish and DIRECTV is our nationwide footprint. DISH has nearly 70 million homes nationwide compared to the nearly 65 million available with DIRECTV. So, even if you're located within just a few miles of a DISH dish, your service may still better received from a DIRECTV dish. This is especially true if you live in the areas that DIRECTV serves.

What about local channels? Do I have to pay for them? With DIRECTV Stream TV, you get free access to all your local network channels as well as all your network channels, along with all your major broadcast networks like NBC, ABC, FOX, and PBS.

How much is DIRECTV streaming per month?

What is the minimum required Internet connection speed for directv streaming per month?

The best answer below should have been, "It depends on the speed of your internet". But no; it's really simple. According to the Directv streaming FAQ (as shown in the top right hand corner), streaming requires a minimum Internet connection speed of 2 Megabits per second (MBPS).

So what is a MBPS? As of October 9, 2024 it is the same as a Gbit/s - 1 million bits per second. And is your Internet connection speed of 2 MBPS enough for you to watch any TV programming live on directv? No, that would be pushing the envelope to a little far.

But here's how to tell if you're ready to stream. Directv streams up to 30 programming channels simultaneously. How fast is this? Well, most of us have an ADSL connection at 14.4 MBPS and more. But for the sake of argument, let's say you have your home wired with fiber optics which are capable of a whopping 4 gigabits per second (Gbps) or 40,000 MBPS. Are you good to go with this much speed? Again, no. If you stream at 30 channels at once on a 30 MBPS connection, each stream will take about 2.9 milliseconds - 2 microseconds, which isn't a moment too soon. To put that in perspective, two seconds is 60000 ms - or 1/100th of a second.

If your TV is set to 25.2 progressive scan (which has 16:9 aspect ratio and 576 x 480 horizontal resolution) and directv streams two 30 channel networks using HD, then you're looking at 20,800,000 bits per second or a grand total of 3.28 Gigahertz - and we already knew you wouldn't have broadband that high in a lifetime. But that's a safe estimate to get you thinking - because you'll never see such speeds.

How many MBPS of speed does your internet need to stream Directv? The truth? Your home needs at least 8 Mbps. If you want to do streaming live TV on DirecTV? You're gonna need some serious beefy hardware. Let's assume you have 10Mbps internet. That's almost 1,000MBPS.

Does DIRECTV have a senior discount?

I'm not sure.

I am a 49 year old female who just received a free HD box and have been having my DirecTV service for 12 years. I know that DirecTV offers senior discounts, but I've never used them. I'd like to use them if they exist, but was hoping to find out if there is a senior discount. Thanks for the help.

I believe that if you call to find out the details, you will be able to find out. However, they might not be able to tell you if you order online.

If you don't mind waiting, it's probably better to find out at least a little bit about the program. If you are interested in it, then call to learn more.

I am currently receiving my second free HD service (in addition to the already existing one). I believe I will have to give a different zip code for the new one. I already gave my current one.

Also, can anyone tell me if my service, as of March, will go up to HD? I had a hard time getting answer on my first query. Yes, they do have a Senior Discount. When I called they gave me my age and zip code and then they showed me a discount screen where I could enter in the number of years I had been a customer and my zip code. Then I was told I could sign up for the discount. However, they said they only offer the discount during the 1st month of new service. However, you can always call their customer service and they will do anything they can to help you.

You are correct. I called last night and they would not tell me the price but they did confirm that they do have a senior discount. I called yesterday and was told there was no discount available for us. We are now on their HD plan. They said they would call us this afternoon with a rebate check.
