I'm a cat owner.

Sometimes, we have to put cats in kennels because they scratch the furniture. So I wondered how cats behave when they are out of kennels?

I started with 3 cats - Tuxedo, Tuxedo-Chan and Tuxedo-Chan (A). They are my family members and they spend their days napping on my bed.

My wife and I live in an apartment. We don't have a yard, so we have to keep them in kennels for their health. I made a kennel with a roof and a door.

Since I didn't have any ideas about how cats behave when they're out of kennels, I decided to find out. How do cats behave when they're out of kennels? After reading several cat behavior articles on the internet, I was thinking of using a hidden camera. However, it seemed to be difficult to set up a hidden camera in our place.

Fortunately, I found a great app called PetSmart Cam. It's really easy to use. I just turned it on and it starts recording automatically. Then, it starts capturing images every 2 minutes.

When I went to capture an image, I was able to check the time and date stamp on the images. I put the camera in my home and went to the bedroom. Then I watched the recorded images and noted down when they appeared.

I observed the cats for over a month, from October 2026 until November 2026. First observation. Tuxedo-Chan (A) is quite fast. The first time I checked the images, she had already been sleeping for a few hours. That means she can go to sleep whenever she wants.

The next morning, I checked the recorded images and found that she hadn't gone to sleep. She was watching the door. This cat will never miss an opportunity to go out. Even though she's being caught in a kennel, she didn't sleep.

I thought I'd leave the camera for 24 hours. After the first observation, I found that she's getting anxious if she's not allowed to go outside.

When I checked the images later, I found that she had gone to sleep.

What are the tendencies of a stray cat?

Do they spend all their time lying around and sleeping or are they active and always on the go?

You've just described exactly the kind of cat that I have for a few years now. I'd say that they are very prone to sleeping, but there is no real consistency to that. They do sleep a lot, and then they're up and about and going to places all the time.

The best part of having a cat in the house? After it sleeps all day long and we let it out in the morning, it will be gone all day, then come back around nightfall, and sleep some more. My cats have a tendency of disappearing into the night for hours and hours, never to return. If I get up during the night (always a rare occurrence), I'll find them, curled up in some corner or up in the tree. I'm glad they trust me so much to leave the house with only them for company!

I've adopted two stray cats, one about six months ago and another over a year ago. In the past two months, I've begun to wonder if these cats are happy. The first one has two different personalities. I love her; she's adorable. But she has to hide to be with me. She's very skittish and hates being held. The other cat is more outgoing, and she loves to play. At one point I saw her jump into a pool of water, and then she went through the whole thing. She loves to play with sticks and other things that she can use as toys. Then she comes back to me and I have to bring her food. And I don't want to feed her if she's happy. I can't imagine a stray cat who feels trapped in my house and gets tired of me so she needs to get away!

What kind of cat would I be looking for? I don't know how old she is, but I could tell you when she was spayed or neutered. That should tell you whether she's been declawed or not. If the second cat were spayed, I'd say she's younger than five years old. But I'm not familiar with these breeds, so I can't really tell you more. I would need more information on the type of cat before I could tell you what you're looking for.
