If it's for spring flowering I'd say February.

If it's for summer flowering, I'd say May.

When do you fertilize camellias? During the cool months in spring and early summer when you cut the branches off to make room for new growth. If you have them pruned in late winter/early spring, then you need to fertilize in late summer to make up for the pruning and the lack of new growth (you prune and fertilize at the same time because you cut them off with a tree pruning saw or loppers and then fertilize with organic matter to stimulate new growth).

What type of fertilizing is used? I use the P version, which is composed of phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Most organic fertilizers are P-version as well.

How often should I fertilize? Every spring and fall, once the branches have begun to die back. In our climate I can't ever remember fertilizing from late summer on through the winter, but in some climates fertilizing throughout the winter is necessary.

The washes are sprayed on while it's still damp, before it starts to dry out. The washes help reduce disease and insect problems, keep the crowns healthy and increase branch strength. Once the trees have been cut, the washes do very little to increase root growth.

Do you spray or water the newly cut trees in spring? This depends on what you want to do. If you are doing a large number of them, with a big crew, you need to wait until they start to dry out naturally and the branches have started to grow together. When you have a lot of trees, you need to set up a drip irrigation system or a hose for watering. For a small number of trees, in cold areas, you can cut the branches and water them immediately after cutting. For best results, you should let the tree dry out naturally and then fertilize and spray the washes.

I have been told 10-12 times in a year, but don't want to be too exact. How many times do they bloom per year? A plant in flower will give you at least one bloom per month and sometimes more. Some plants grow new leaves when in flower, so I would suggest that your plant is in flower most months of the year and is putting out a new leaf once a month. I would expect annual flower to bloom 1-2 times per year. The key to flower time depends a lot on when you buy the plant. Some plants will never be in flower, others will always be, others will only flower under certain circumstances (in very poor soil for instance) or with other conditions. But generally, plants in flower will be producing flowers for 3 months of the year. If you are unsure about what's going on, you might want to ask the seller for more info, as they are better at knowing how their plant should behave than we are, especially for some of the newer varieties.

Do any camellias bloom in summer?

It's been snowing here for the last day and a half and looks like it will snow today too.

The only plants that I have seen are some geraniums, gladioli, and some tulips. No camellias. The next thing I know they're gonna start blooming in the spring.

I've been hearing they bloom from May to June. Do you see any in that timeframe? I love those flowers! My favorite is "Camellia 'Snow Hill'". There's a huge display of these at my church. The flowers just burst open in July!

There are lots of different varieties. They all bloom in different colors, but we are blessed with so many choices at our local big box stores. I remember when we moved to the west coast about 8 years ago there were not that many choices. I remember picking the first camellia I bought because it was the only one that had petals with that particular color. Over the years I have collected quite a few.

I have heard that they can bloom for as long as six months. Mine bloomed until mid October and started to fade over the next couple of months. I do not have any blooming now, so I will check back next month.

My mother got the idea of collecting camellias from her parents in California. They had two large bushes and she would go through the bushes to collect them for me. I had a very large flowerbed with plenty of room to grow them. Most of them have survived in my garden. Our local florist is now offering double-flowered camellias called "Winter White". We have one in the back yard and it blooms almost non-stop until late October.

As far as summer, the camellias we get here are "Hakone" and some hybrids of them. Those are hardy in zone 8A so they bloom every year in our part of Oregon, and they flower right up until freezing weather hits. Then they all shrivel up, I suppose because their leaves aren't protecting them anymore.
