How big are white camellias?
I'm planting several thousand white camellias this spring from seed, and have a list of a dozen sizes.
It's not an exact science in our neighborhood to determine exact plant sizes, since the plants can change over the years (in height) before blooming. I would like to know how big, based on what I've planted, they are likely to be when they bloom.
Re: ? Thank you guys. So this was all helpful. Here is what the site said. The smallest 1' flower should be planted about 2-3' deep. Then it says there is no minimum or maximum on that height as long as the rootball is large. Mine was about 6". Now, I've only grown one at a time, so I don't have an average. In this case I think it will do okay because it is so much bigger than most plants.
That's great! White camellias are hardy, often very hardy. You'll be fine and you're already growing them. If you get a chance, look into getting more started. As they mature and are more established, they really get to love the sun!
Well, my camellias grew in the spring of 2026 and then in the spring of 2026. They were already growing well and looking nice. Then came 2026 hailstorm and all but broke my back. At that time there were huge numbers in yards and they were planted close together. My neighbors told me it would take forever to pick the camellias, if you ever could even start doing it. Well, they never got any taller, even though many looked over 5'. I tried to grow them again in 2026 (the following spring after the hailstorm) but they grew tall (but not to tall for their rootballs) and looked great - they'd gotten very healthy. I never did get any tall blooms.
This spring when I decided to go ahead with them again, it's too late to re-planting with that many seeds. The good news is that the seed is sold here locally. I'll be ordering enough seed to cover my 3 largest lots which should be able to come up very well this year. I'll be trying to grow some smaller sized plants.
