Do camellias like full sun or shade?
If I'm not mistaken, the one you have is a red.
How much water do they need? Watering in dry weather will encourage growth. I think you can get away with one full watering per year, but not two or three.
The best time to water a camellia is after a period of hot weather, but not during a period of drought. A few hours after a hard rain, the soil will be saturated, so watering should be done about that time. Hot, dry weather will prevent the soil from absorbing water. Cold weather will reduce the water-holding capacity of the soil.
If your soil is dry and you water with a fine stream, the soil may not absorb enough water to satisfy the roots. When watering comes in a fine stream, it seeps down into the soil and is absorbed. Water in a fine stream does not have enough force to force the soil apart. It flows down into the soil and absorbs.
A larger amount of water may be necessary to water a tree or shrub if the soil is sandy. The roots won't be able to reach deep into the soil.
If the camellia has been watered too deeply, the soil may be so saturated that it has no room to absorb water. A camellia is like any other plant: the roots need a certain amount of moisture to grow. When the roots can't get enough moisture, the plant will wilt.
Plant a new camellia in a pot that's at least 1/2 inch bigger than the root ball. If the pot is too small, the roots will crowd. The pot should be wide enough to allow room for the root ball. This prevents the roots from wrapping around the sides of the pot and forming a mat.
If you've been watering your camellia for a few days, the roots may not have had a chance to absorb any water. If your camellia is still wilting, it's likely that you've watered too deeply. Water until the leaves look moist.
Watering too deeply can cause soil to dry out more quickly than it would if you'd watered just enough to keep the leaves moist. If the camellia isn't wilting, the soil is probably moist enough. How much water should I water my plants? A good rule of thumb is to water every day or two during the growing season.
What month do you prune camellias?
I did some research, and found the most likely time for pruning was in the fall.
My current ones are in a bed with a few other beds around them. The only one that I want to prune is the big one that is right next to my porch. It's still young, maybe 4-5 years old.
Should I just wait till it has more of a bush type shape? If I wait till fall, will it hurt to prune it now? I have had a similar situation, except they were not a row. It was all planted in a circular pattern and there were only 2 camellias. Since there was nothing around them, they got full sun, and the plants were quite large. One was on a corner, one on the inside, and they were about 7 feet apart.
There was a big rainstorm and I was watering them that night, and then, I woke up to find that they were totally dead. I'm not sure if I can use this as an excuse, but the water damage had been happening over several months, and I had no idea. So, I'm really sad, but I don't want to plant new ones and then have them die. I'm wondering if I can dig up these two and plant them in another spot, and then plant more? Would that be ok? That's a very sad story. I don't think you would have any problem putting the plant in a new spot, but I'm not sure about the root system. You may need to dig it up, clean off all the debris, and replant. If you are unsure, I would recommend getting a soil test to see what the soil needs. In your case, the camellia was planted in a heavy clay soil.
My camellia grew very large and I just couldn't cut it back, so I decided to let it grow into a nice bush. It did make for a nice backdrop for my patio. In addition, I am sure it will be easier to pick in the future. I know it hurts to let go of plants, but I'm glad I didn't try to do anything with it.
I'm sorry you had to lose your plant, but it's better to try and give the plant another chance. I wish you the best!
How do you maintain camellias?
The simple answer is with fertilizer and water.
In a previous article, I explained that the two most common types of camellias are Oriental and European camellias. To keep your Oriental camellias in top shape, you need to fertilize and water them.
Oriental camellias like to grow in partial shade. They love a moist, shady environment. If you don't have any shade trees in your yard, you can place your camellia bush in a pot or container with a few windowsill-sized holes in it.
Fertilizing camellias. Most plants will grow best if they receive a good dose of fertilizer once a month, but camellias are no different. You need to fertilize them just once a month, so be sure to follow the directions on the fertilizer label.
When you fertilize your camellia bush, it is a good idea to water the bush first. This lets the fertilizer sink into the soil and reach the roots of your camellia.
You should be able to spot your camellia bush's flowers early in the spring, but you should wait until you see the first signs of flowers before you fertilize. Watering your camellias. Camellias love plenty of water. If you live in an area where it is rainy all year long, you may not need to water your camellia every day.
If it is hot and dry, you will want to water your camellia every day, or at least once a week. Fertilizing camellias and watering your camellias are two important aspects of caring for your camellias. They do not have to be complicated. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the fertilizer label and watch for signs of yellowing on your leaves.
One of the best ways to tell when it is time to fertilize your camellia is to look for the first signs of flowers. As soon as you see the first camellia flowers appear, fertilize your plant. Your camellia will likely start blooming sometime in the spring.

Where is the best place to plant a camellia bush?
I have been trying to find the best location to plant my camellia trees.
It seems that the camellias look good regardless of where they are planted. I have had some success with one, then a week later it seems to be all dried up. The other one is alive and growing very slowly in a pot.
If any of you have any suggestions where I can get good results with these little beauties, I would love to hear them. Thank you. The best place to plant a Camellia tree is in its own shade and on its own side of the garden. But be careful not to plant near a lawn where the grass may try to steal the moisture from the tree or a neighbour whose trees may also have water stressed roots.
A word of warning: Camellias do require regular watering during dry spells and so need more attention than your average houseplant but come what may there will be days when you know you've simply neglected it and it must still give its first flush of colour and you will be surprised at how long a Camellia can last with proper care. You should expect it to produce flowers after 6 years of age for which we should be prepared and hope. Well planted, camellias should generally outlast most of us. They do however require fairly bright sun and water, as well as a sheltered, warm, sheltered spot in the garden.
If yours is looking a bit droopy, give it a good shake every year as autumn and spring frosts happen here regularly, and make sure you remember to water. If it was left on a window sill in an overheated room, you will probably have to dig it up and rebury it in a coldframe for a winter, or plant it again, once spring comes back. If you look up camellia plants sold in pots on the internet you'll see which ones thrive best in such a situation. Unfortunately they won't have grown too big for their space and therefore there won't be much in the way of photos.
If it wasn't growing in a very warm spot, then the winter could have frozen roots and caused damage. If it has done, then you'll need to wait for spring before planting it again.
