How to solve the problem of access denied?

I have a question about some database design.

I have a table that contains the following columns: ID, NAME, PHONE, EMAIL, PASSWORD and USERNAME. What is the best way to deal with the problem of an application not having a username?

Should it be a column in the database or should it be stored in the application's database? If in the application's database, how can I prevent a user from changing the value of the USERNAME? I've tried both methods. In the database, the value is stored as a varchar(50). In the application, I check for the username against a white list of usernames. If it's not on the list, I simply display an error message.

The solution you've described is the typical way to do this, if I understand your question correctly. If the application allows only one login per user, the easiest way to solve the problem is to create a view and add an additional column to that view which contains the username. When you want to access that data you just use the view and don't even have to worry about the username.

This sounds pretty good, but what happens if there are two people with the same username? In that case the application would either have to allow multiple logins per username or have a way to resolve conflicts. It's not exactly a common requirement for most applications.

The problem was that the username I was trying to create on the domain is already being used by another user.
