How do I remove the school administrator from my Chromebook?

Hi there!

If you're reading this then you either have a new Chromebook and would like to set up the user(s) on it or you have an existing Chromebook and need to remove a user from the device. It's super easy and I'll show you in just a moment how to do it. But first, some history on how the user management system has changed over the years.

The original school Laptops. Remember those older, Windows-based Laptops we talked about in schools? They had a very basic but very useful User Account. They also had limited capabilities, meaning that it was pretty easy to share accounts. However, the user accounts were still managed by an administrator, which meant someone had to physically be in the building. If they were gone, you couldn't log into the account or create a new one. It was a manual process to handle. When a child logged into their account, you could see who else was logged in, or if they were connected to the wireless network. You could tell if someone was on Facebook or playing Angry Birds. These Laptops were made for kids. The idea was that parents can set up a few things to protect the kids from the dangers of the world and that the kids would learn how to use a computer at their own pace while still using adult apps that don't contain dangerous content. Of course, those Laptops didn't have a ton of storage, so there was not a lot of space to manage users (or apps). Also, if you didn't know how to run Linux and it wasn't installed on the device, it was a bit of a mystery what was going on inside the Laptop. And for someone who knows how to handle Linux, it can be a pain to deal with all those different layers of software and workflows that happen when you do things as a regular user. This all being said, the early models of these Laptops were able to be managed by the school system admins as part of their normal duties.

The modern school Laptops. Things have changed quite a bit since the early days of personal computing. Modern laptops are more powerful and easier to manage. But more importantly, students can log into the machine on their own.

How to remove school enterprise enrollment on Chromebook?

I just received a Google Chromebook through our business.

I didn't want the School Enterprise Option in place, but when I tried to change my enrollment settings, the only choice I had was to enable or disable school enterprise enrollment, and there is not such setting available anymore.

How can I get rid of this option so I can save my organization's data from having to enter students' usernames and passwords every year? You don't have a choice. As explained on the document "Configuring your Chromebook", the School Enterprise Service option is part of the service agreement that a school must accept before it can issue a new device, but you can't opt-out of it, nor remove it after they issued you the unit. It's really a way for schools to sell their services (or in other terms, to generate additional funding for the school) and, as the user manual put it:

"In the future, if more features are planned that support the school's activities, you'll have the option to accept the new features with a paid service or decline them and stick with your standard version.
