I was looking into this same thing. I read that you could even enable the Lock screen and then disable the passcode. I think this is great because if she somehow got her phone lost and it gets stolen and then someone else has her apple id/password, they can still disable the passcode and she can still get her stuff off of it. She has an iPhone 4S that I believe supports iOS 6. I'm not sure if the newer ones support this feature.
