What is the best iPad parental control?
I have had my iPad since it was released and have used it with my children to play games and watch movies and to do homework. This has all been great but I am looking for a way to limit the time they can use their iPads. I am looking for something that would allow me to see what websites they are using and how long they spend on the internet. I don't want to do this over the phone. Is there anything that I can install on the iPad that will give me the answer to these questions?
I have tried several apps that do parental controls, including Family Link. The problem with them is that the rules and limitations are based on the user. I want to set some limits for the iPad so that they can only use the iPad for homework and games.
Thanks. Bill I was using an app called iControl which worked well. It could be setup as the default browser or something else, the parents could see what sites the children were visiting, and you could specify where they could and could not go. They could also get a list of your child's friends, their Facebook profile, and what you thought was appropriate.
I believe that it's still available for the iPhone, though it's been a while since I've used it. There are other apps that do parental controls but I have not found one that I like. I will have to try some more.
My kids have been using my iPad for almost a year now. We have the free family link app installed and it works fine for us. I can see their browsing history and when they were using the internet, and I can see what sites they visited. We have the apps for a number of families, and the site looks at their usage, but I don't think it has an option to limit usage time.
I do not have an iPad, so I can't comment. One thing that did work well for us, though, was to set up the iPad to log into our wifi router as a guest. If someone who isn't logged in goes to the internet, it will block them from accessing it.
Have you looked into OpenDNS? With a DNS, you could set up the parents to receive a message whenever their kids connect to a website that the parents don't want them to visit.
How can I monitor my kids iPad for free?
If you live in Chicago, there is a program called Child Safety Online.
In that time your child must make a minimum of 400 visits to Safe Kids/Child Safety Online to access the various training courses. The classes cover subjects like how not to talk to strangers and what to do if someone knocks on the door. I highly recommend getting your kids enrolled in this program because it teaches how to deal with everyday situations safely. For example if someone breaks into your house and steals your stuff, they can enroll in the class and learn how to handle the situation without damaging the electronics, or injuring someone who doesn't even realize what's going on.
I wish it was this easy to have someone monitor your child's iPad. Let me start by telling you why I don't think this solution will work for you. You need to be able to monitor the location of the device at all times so that you can be sure that they are using it to get their online training. You need to figure out the Wi-Fi settings to your kids devices and turn them off. You will want to set it so that they can only use it for apps that they are approved for on the Apple store. It's super easy. I have screenshots below.
The only problems I have found is some children will not allow you to control the settings and you need to set your settings up so that they can be monitored 24/7. That is not the case for my kids. The kids are smart and they didn't allow me to turn everything on when I initially started setting up my Wi-Fi network. When I asked to do it, my wife said she would do it for me. She knew that we couldn't watch over our kids all the time because they were older than 7. At that point I was glad she did that. But when my kids start using a mobile app such as Spotify or VZW TV or Amazon they can access it over Wi-Fi without allowing us to know where they are.
Is there a completely free parental control app?
There's the free version, but they force you to pay for premium in order to control the app remotely.
If you don't want to pay to have the app on your phone, here's some free alternatives:
SonicWALL Parental Control. You can add time restrictions, set email and text alerts, send notifications, and lock down web browsing. The good thing about this program is that you can do everything with your PC as well. It's not available for iOS but you can still use it on your iPad with a jailbroken device.
K9 App. This app does the exact same things as SonicWall, including parental controls. It has web filtering built in, however it does not allow you to remotely control your device. With your free account, you can block the apps on your smartphone for viewing too much content. You can block social media apps as well so make sure that your kids don't accidentally find their way onto Instagram.
Safesense. If your older child really knows what he's doing, he can bypass your restrictions with Safesense as well. You have to add him as an admin on the app and he can download any blocked app that's available. With this app, you can block apps but you can't control them remotely as they don't have a web interface.
FreeAppz. You need to buy your subscription for this free app but you get 10 free hours. This app lets you create access lists and also allows you to see the full history of websites visited. The bad thing about this app is that they require phone data in order to work. So if your kid uses a ton of data every month you might as well use the paid version as they're the same.99 in-app purchase. This program works like SonicWALL which you can control with your computer and you can remotely block your phone. This app has more features than SonicWALL. For example, you can block internet access through a USB device, access a specific website, etc.
What is the best app to control children's time on iPad?
My daughter and I just started a new adventure and we don't know how to control the time on her iPad at all.
Our experience has been that she has used it all day long and we never turned off the app. She can only make it stop playing a movie that she has made and she can't turn it off.
Comments. Have you tried putting a sleep setting on the home screen of her iPad? If she is old enough to use your iPad, she probably has a level of ability to use her own iPad and know how to turn the music off. I hope that helps.
Thank you for your response, but I do have a bit of experience with this. We have two devices in my household, but only one iPad. My 13 year old daughter is an amazing user when it comes to technology. I gave her this iPad when I found out she was addicted to video games. She knew how to turn off apps, shut down apps and even turn off the tablet.
She loves to watch movies on the iPad, and has made more than 20 before my husband and I intervened. There are apps for movies, but I believe Apple is moving away from them to allow what my daughter enjoys to be available to the public in their stores.
This has caused a lot of trouble for her in our home as she has been using it all day everyday. She won't use the sleep function. She wants it off, but we're trying to work through it. There was a time when all the other kids were using theirs all day, and now they want to keep hers. They aren't able to go a full day without hers. It's a very sensitive subject to us.
There are a few times where we have to take the iPads out and remind her to turn it off. She's got a problem with the power button. We have found ways to get around the power button, so she is able to use the iPad all day like it should be used.
We have gone so far as buying a case for it so it can't be touched by anyone. That is one of the only issues we've had because we want everyone to use it. We have no idea how to get around the problem without getting a case. It seems to be a battle of willpower with her. We have been working on this issue for quite awhile.
