Do I need a modem with an AC1200 WiFi router?

I am interested in buying a new modem and I am wondering if I need to get a modem with an AC1200 WiFi router with it.

I want the router to be attached to the modem, not the switch.

My current router is 4Ghz / dual band and is attached to a wireless access point. I currently have my modem connected to a switch and I can get my laptop directly connected to my modem through ethernet, but it is running a bit slower than expected.

I am trying to configure my AC1200 modem to be an AP. I have gone through the steps listed above to no avail. I have tried using both the auto configuration and the manual configuration. When I try to configure the IP settings the box turns red and when I try to restart it, I get the message that the modem is turned off. The IP settings page comes up on my computer but it is unconfigured. The AC1200 modem is set to be my default gateway.

I have tried using the 192.1 router login. It asks me to type in a password. I enter the password and click log in. I go to the IP settings and try to do what the instructions say to do. I enter the IP address and click save and restart. I go to the IP settings and then click on advanced settings. I try to configure the IP settings but it comes back saying that the modem is off.

This has been driving me crazy. I have gotten help from a friend but I still don't know what I am doing wrong. Can someone please help me?

How do I connect my NETGEAR AC1200 to my router?

I've finally installed my Netgear AC1200 N600 router, and I'm trying to connect it to my TV via HDMI. I was able to get it hooked up in one minute. That's when I found that the HDMI cable from the router to the television is about as thick as a pencil. It looks like something else could be used instead of this cable, but I don't know what to use. All the options in the Netgear menu that refer to a router, just say "access point". What I've been trying to do is to get my Xbox 360 and other devices to access the Netgear, which they could do before I had the router. I'd like to start off by asking, how does it connect to other devices when it has no internet?

Thanks! If you didn't already have the cable from the AC1200 to the TV then you were limited to whatever bandwidth the AC1200 device can provide. You needed that cable to communicate with the AC1200 device.

You might be able to find a longer cable. Or if it were a router I am thinking that you could go out to the end of your cable and replace the plug or even pull the wires and add some longer ones.
