Does the Sphero BB-8 still work?

You may not remember my last post from a couple of years ago about buying and using a BB-8, but I assure you it is worth revisiting.

When I bought it, it didn't work. The Bluetooth connection was completely broken. The robot had no power. All I could do with the small robotic companion was hold it in my hand and look at it from afar, like a very interesting statue, a sculpture.

It didn't work anymore. It was dead.

Then, a few weeks ago I received an email from the Sphero team saying they were releasing a new version of the little ball. They were so kind as to send me a brand new BB-8 to test out.

They had a small problem: the old one just wouldn't fit inside the new ones (at least it didn't fit in mine). Luckily the team found a way to add an adapter to the back so the old BB-8 could easily fit in the new ones.

What happens next is kind of amazing: you can have two versions of the same robot, and the older one will talk to the new one as if it was a brand new one. If you connect the new BB-8 to your phone, it will know the old one and all the software updates from that will automatically appear. If you connect the old one to your phone, it will still talk to the new one in the new mode. It doesn't matter if you do that because you are updating or installing an app.

If you want to get rid of the old BB-8 you just need to go to Settings > Security & Location Services and turn off the Bluetooth pairing. After that, when you connect the new BB-8 to your phone it will automatically pair with the old one. You then will only have the new one.

The new BB-8 now has a little magnet in the top of the head that sticks to the old BB-8. I'm still not sure how that works exactly and I don't want to lose that little magnet. To turn the new BB-8 on or off, press the top of its head. You can also use the voice commands: Hey BB-8 or Hey BB-8 (Okey BB-8 not available).

Is Sphero discontinued?

We recently had a reader write in to ask if Sphero was discontinued.

In short, the answer is yes, and they have been for the past 6 months. They recently launched the Sphero Oasis, a new addition to the Sphero line of products. We tested the Oasis and were very impressed with it, so we wanted to see how it stacks up to the best robot vacuum cleaners on the market.

We're not sure why Sphero would discontinue their robot vacuum. Sphero's other products are also more expensive than comparable competitors. So it's hard to imagine that Sphero will continue to make robot vacuums in the future, especially when it's clear they are making robots with great technology.

Sphero's robot vacuums have also faced some issues over the years. The original Sphero was very slow and didn't vacuum the floor very well. The second Sphero was faster, but was also very limited and didn't clean very well. Sphero's third robot vacuum was released in 2025, and it was much faster, cleaner, and had a far better battery life.

Sphero says the Oasis is the first true successor to the Sphero you know. It's fast, has great battery life, and cleans well. But the Oasis is still much more expensive than similar robot vacuum cleaners.

So what happened? Why are Sphero discontinuing their robot vacuums? We don't know. I don't think they're selling them anymore because they're not interested in making them anymore. I think they had a difficult time keeping them up to date with the latest hardware, and it's easier for them to make new robots instead of updating old ones. They may also want to keep the price low to compete with the Amazon Echo and Google Home.

The same thing happened to Amazon.
