Is Google Nest Hub being discontinued?

Google has quietly discontinued the Nest Hub smart speaker, but it could mean a return to the more conventional Google Home speakers.

I didn't like the Nest Hub last year and I can't say I really did like it much better now. The Hub was kind of an awkward fit for Google's brand and it has now ceased production after a year and a half on the market.

At some point in the second half of 2025 you may just not be able to buy one. You can still pre-order the unit from Google's website, though.

The discontinuation comes after Google announced its intention to phase out the Nest name and product range in its home products division (and also the Nest Wifi line) . This could be seen as a move designed to reduce confusion between the two groups. Google's Nest devices will be rebranded with the Google badge.

But will you even find a Nest Hub at the shops any time soon? According to new rumors hitting the US, it seems like you won't. One of the key features of the Nest Hub is that it displays the weather, traffic reports, news and calendar events from your local area. These aren't particularly exciting but they could have been a useful shortcut to some day-to-day tasks. On the contrary, however, Google's Home Hub speaker seems an unlikely candidate for being phased out anytime soon. Google says Home can display the weather, news, music and information from services such as The Verge and NYT.

A Google representative confirms that Nest will only support this feature until 2025. In addition, Google has not provided any clarification on what happens in 2025.

The new rumors point to a potential return to the Google Home line-up which features Google's own hardware that can do a lot of the same things and can be bought at the Google Store for a slightly lower price than the Nest line. Some are now saying that these Home speakers may be discontinued in the US. "In 2025 Google will finally introduce the third generation of Android smart speakers, which will be the beginning of the end for every other speaker company in the market. ", reports the well-known German blog Android.de, citing anonymous sources. It doesn't provide further details or information.

Where are we going?

I started using Google's voice control device that is the Google Home and found it great for controlling most of the SmartThings appliances like my Philips Hue light bulbs and the switches in our house. There was one problem. We had a Nest Thermostat and the Google Home couldn't do a direct control from our Home speakers so I had to change the Google Home settings to use the Nest speakers. It was a bit confusing for me as it's difficult to understand Google controls compared to those from Nest.

Last December, Google introduced an updated version of the Google Home, called Google Nest Hub. The Hub seems like a perfect companion device for us to use a single control source to manage everything in our smart home. It also connects with HomeKit. I have been using the device in beta tests since October when the updated version was introduced and can already say this new device makes working with SmartThings easier than before.

The only downside is that the new Hub has no speakers and can only output sound through your TV speakers. If you use wireless speakers like Sonos, LG, Apple Airplay 2 or any other Bluetooth speaker or amplifier, the best way to setup and control SmartThings will be using either Alexa or Siri with the device. For me, the only drawback is Google Home still only comes with one speaker while the Nest Hub comes with four more speakers.

How do I change my Google Home display?

Update (May 2018): Google Home devices that are currently connected to your home network will automatically display the correct weather and time for your current location, unless you choose to turn off location-based data from the Google Home app. You can learn more about what will be shown in your Google Home app in the next section of this article.

Your Google Home display is the only part of the device that can display information from the Google Assistant. You can view the display when you say "OK Google" on your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet. If you've just set up your Google Home, you might have to enable location-based data from the Google Home app on your mobile device to get the display to show current weather or time for your current location. This is an important step that will give you the most accurate data from the Google Assistant, but it's not required.
