What is hostname proxy?
In your example, when you are on your computer the hostname is 127.
0.1 which is your computer name (as you configured your DHCP server to) or the loopback interface. If you can connect to that then its working as expected.
When you are on your laptop, you are no longer on 127.1 but instead on your external ip (xxx.xxx).
If you are looking for a way to have your laptop and your desktop show up the same hostname on a network, then one way is to assign a hostname to the gateway in your router or AP (in your case a dsl modem) and configuring both your laptop and your desktop so they get the dns name from the router. And if that is not feasible then there are plenty of software solutions.

What do I write in proxy hostname?
I have a Debian 8 (Jessie) server which is set up to act as a proxy. This server is configured to listen on port 8080, and to forward requests to another host/port (eg. 10.2:80) on a different network. I use this proxy to access the internet via the VPN.
When I open a browser, my proxy IP address is my proxy server's IP address, however when I type in the proxy hostname I am typing in a hostname different to my proxy server's hostname, for example if I use "google.com" my proxy server's hostname is "localhost" but the actual hostname typed is "10.2".
This is not a problem if I connect to the VPN, or if I am not connected to the VPN, but it is a problem when I am using both the VPN and the proxy at the same time. How do I tell my browser that the hostname I am typing is the correct one? You don't have to specify a hostname when using a SOCKS proxy.
How do I find the proxy hostname?
My network is setup like this: The proxy server is a Windows Server 2025 R2 Standard.
Windows 10 clients are connected to the network, but not the proxy server. The windows 10 clients have an option to "Use a proxy server for your network". I don't know if this is related, but on my windows 10 machine, I did disable the "auto detect proxy settings" option, and instead, manually set the proxy server IP address. Open the Settings app, select Network & Internet, and then select Network & sharing. Select Change Proxy settings. Click the Find another proxy setting. Button.
Type the proxy's host name or IP address. If it is a domain name, then enter the fully qualified domain name.
