I'm trying to do the opposite of what ping does.
I want to ping an IP address and have it return the hostname of the computer.
You can do a reverse DNS lookup using dnsquery in C/C+. Here is a sample code that will return the hostname (I don't know if it works on all systems): #include
EDIT: I am not 100% sure about this, but I believe that the answer is 'no' in general. It would depend on the details of the OS.

How to get hostname from IP command?
I have a set of IP addresses and hostnames.
How do I find out the hostname of a given IP address? For example, if I have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a hostname of ubuntu, how do I get ubuntu?
You can try to use dig command, it works on local network. You can get all possible results by using -p option and then you will get the hostname with -x option.1 192.1

How to get hostname in cmd?
I have to write a command that contains the hostname that is used to execute it.
How to get the hostname and use it in cmd? For other systems without the hostname command, you can do the following, which returns the OS name and short hostname: os -s hostname. If the hostname is always a fixed piece of information you know ahead of time (eg "host1" or "host2", but not the hostname of the machine you're executing the script on) you can get it by parsing the output of the whois command. The following PowerShell code will print the domain of any IP address you feed it with one of the following two commands. The last command would only be supported in Windows Vista or later, because it requires .NET Framework 3.Net.contains('"hostname":')) else }
# You can use a single pipe to pass output to the other one too.DownloadString(') Write-Host C:Scriptsget-hostname.ps1 Invoke-Item C:Scriptsget-hostname.
