Is Kong better than nginx?

I've never tried nginx but Kong is a little more powerful and I don't feel like learning a bunch of new tech.

Should I stick with the standard LUA, I'm sure that there will be a new update in a few years to add another language and I might have to spend more time setting it up when nginx can just take care of things for me? @chase I think you are probably fine with using nginx as it is pretty nice and easy to set up. Just looking at the differences in functionality it looks like kong is just about twice as smart as nginx although I can't really speak to how easy it would be to just switch out an nginx server with a kong server.

The only reason I would suggest trying kong is if you find yourself having some trouble with your current nginx configs or having something in your .conf files that you don't like/agree with. For example, nginx does not have a ton of flexibility when it comes to serving your static content from CDN or s3 buckets. They do provide an option to specify different ssl settings if you are running any ssl for users other than the default ssl site, but kong lets you configure this a bit more. Or if you want to make changes to the caching headers based on subdomain etc.

I can understand if you are really stuck on lua but I think it might be worth it to see what kind of work and time savings you could get by using kong for the first time. Of course you always have the ability to switch back to nginx which would be the same thing as the time spent switching the first time anyways.

Great info guys! Thanks for adding all of this and making the transition for a newbie a bit easier. Would it be bad to say that the best option if for me right now is still to just stick with lua? The lua is going to give you more performance for now. But after one month (maybe 2 or 3) switch the kong, it's going to outperform lua for now. When you'll have a better idea of what you are going to do then just use as you know which is more suitable.
