Is Apisix better than Kong?

The question is a legitimate one and often the answer depends on your

Need for Kubernetes.

The good news is that with both of these solutions you get all the same benefits, but the answer also depends on your use case. In this blog post I will cover this topic, giving you a clear picture of when you would choose each solution.

Is the organization building a new team, or a company growing into a new market? Do you need to work across multiple cloud providers or just within your own platform? Do you require an application integration framework like AWS WAF or AWS LES? Do you need to manage a large Kubernetes cluster with multi-tenant components? Is the business unit responsible for application security, or is it the IT group? Is the cloud provider you are working with providing native Kubernetes APIs (Google GKE), or can you deploy K8s yourself (AWS)? How much time do you have to build your solution? How long do you have to support it? Are you building a monolith or a microservices architecture? Do you need multi-az redundancy? What are the security and compliance requirements of your company? Do you need a multi-cloud solution? Let's look at these questions and compare the Apisix and Kong solutions. Who is the client? As I mentioned above, in my experience the biggest question here is: who is your client? Is the organization building a new team, or a company growing into a new market? If your organization is building a team, Apisix or Kong will give you the flexibility to try both as single solutions, and use them both in parallel until you get clarity on which one works best. Apisix comes out slightly ahead in my opinion. Kong has two major limitations compared to Apisix: Apisix includes a Kubernetes distribution. The Kong distribution is only a standalone version. With Kong you will have to add your own Kubernetes distribution. This is not required with Apisix.

With Kong you will be limited to the official Cloud Native Services. This means you can only create a namespace with the public Google and Azure services.

Is Kong a good API gateway?

For our API gateway, we need all the necessary features an API gateway has (security, SSL termination, load balancing, authorization), but also provide other services like authentication or access control. Kong was designed as such. It seems a good fit because a) it is backed by a big open source community, b) it can do almost all of what I listed above, but I think we're missing one thing - TLS. In my blog post, I wrote that:

Kong provides a nice abstraction layer to manage and distribute your TLS certificates to all your API / API services, so the last piece we need for full TLS coverage is using a self-signed certificate on the backend server. Now Kong has several advantages over traditional API gateways like HAProxy in terms of security: 1) Kong is a managed service in a way similar to Load Balancer for API gateways, so you are getting security audits; 2) If you have multiple API servers (using internal names like auth0/salesforce) Kong does the magic to add the secret of the backend server and generate an auto-generated secret; 3) This is the main advantage I see - the certificate key is actually only used by Kong, this means if someone finds the key in Kong's log, it still shouldn't be possible to decompile the key and decrypt the traffic. Of course I don't want to take your secret away ;) ;).

So it appears we are done but how about when you need to use SSL / TLS

Now all these services usually will work with some kind of self-signed SSL certificate. Well, you still need a certificate for the upstream server. You could use the existing SSL certificate, but there is no way for Kong to load it automatically into the upstream settings. You'd have to pass the certificate from Kong via request header or other ways. Also since Kong doesn't provide HTTP2 support for HTTPS, you won't be able to use SNI to switch to the right certificate based on hostname. For these reasons, even if you have a self-signed certificate for the server, you'll still need a custom solution.
