What's leaving Max June 2023?

It's the kind of story that has a "best-seller" sticker on the cover, but it's also a book that I'd feel compelled to read even if it wasn't available in any library.

Why? Because I can relate to it, at least on the surface. I was a teenage mom and had a child in my late teens. I got an education in how to be a mom and raise children, and my two children turned out well. But then I went back to school, got my advanced degree, and went on to start a career. It's not that I'm not interested in seeing my kids grow up and get the kinds of opportunities I didn't have, but I'm not sure that the book will leave me feeling as emotional about their lives as I did about my own.

I'd read the book for another reason, too: the father of the daughter in question. He's one of the most important characters in the book, and that's because he's a real person with real problems. He's not just some figurehead whose only role is to beaten up by the author to get readers to "empathize." He's a man who has real feelings. And that's rare in these times when the only people we read about who are fully realized are our own family members and friends, never mind the kind of characters who populate the pages of books.

I've enjoyed this particular book for more than one reason. But I'm glad to have the opportunity to talk about it on the blog, because I think there's a lot of value in what author Max June is trying to do.

What is the story behind this book? Max June is a real person. He grew up in rural Kansas and now lives in New York City. He's had more than his share of problems: drug addiction, bankruptcy, divorce, all kinds of heartache. In the book, he's been through prison, too. The part of him that emerges in the story is who he is at the end of the day, and not someone we can easily walk away from. That's something I admire.

The book is told from multiple points of view. How did you decide to tell the story from multiple points of view? There's a natural progression of the story, and I didn't want to force it.
