Let's see what our members say. I am a recruiter and I use LinkedIn. There are two ways to look for people. You can search, which does not show you the location of the user. You can also use the "search by interest" feature. A lot of recruiters only use this and rarely look at the other search options.

Another common complaint is that it's a horrible interface. We've had a few users mention that, but I don't think many people use it (in the way that it was intended). I've seen many recruiters with profiles (or even groups) that are very targeted to recruiters. That is, they have recruiters only as a group, where everyone else is considered a candidate. That doesn't make sense in the age of Social Media, IMO.

My own personal experience: I've gotten more interviews through my LinkedIn profile than any other method. I would agree that looking for a talent pool is important in today's day and age, but I think that recruiters need to broaden their perspective. Yes, LinkedIn isn't what it used to be, but there are still so many ways to find the right candidates for your company. Some of the best candidates aren't in a job market or they may be in a different state than you are. I have a page that is more like a CV than a traditional resume. It's important to keep a pulse on things like Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, etc., but not focus on it. You can find a lot of people from these avenues and have some great conversations with them.

I have to agree that being too focused on social media sites, etc., can hurt your ability to find good candidates. You never know if your candidates will be friends with someone in your company and it's pretty easy to find out if you spend the time to look. So, I think that it's important to stay engaged, but to not spend all your time on it either.

You can also consider some types of social networks for recruiting. For example, on LinkedIn, you can use advanced search to find some great job opportunities. There's also the "In" section, which allows you to find people who are currently employed at your company. Then, you can make a connection and ask them to help with your searches.
